Title: Looking for marriage record in England
Post by: KimberlyAnnLambert on Saturday 15 December 18 21:49 GMT (UK)
I have been looking for a record of marriage for my 3GGs for decades. I am also looking for this record for potential clues about their place of birth and parents.
This is the information I have but it is not verified:
William Lambert b 1817 maybe Sussex.
Esther Campbell b 1817 maybe Portsea.
They were likely married in Portsea, Surrey or Sussex.
They seem to have moved around at lot and I can't find record of them in 1851.

This could be the record of marriage with a misspelled family name for my 3GF but the location is off:
https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/person/tree/86762533/person/36546481376/facts

This is the information I have on Esther so far:
https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/person/tree/86762533/person/36546481376/facts

I would really appreciate breaking down this dam after all these years.

Can you tell us where & when their first child was born, please?

Unfortunately the link won't work for people who don't have a Canadian Ancestry sub.   :-\

How did you establish the possible birth places?  Do you have them on a later census?

1841 Census HO107/ 413 Book 2/fo 8 p 13
Portsea
William Lambourne 45 b Hampshire

Piece413Book2Folio8Page number13

William Lambourne Age 45 -(basket maker) all the other censuses state he is born in Brighton, Sussex England
Esther Lambourne Age 20
William Lambourne Age 6

They were very likely illiterate. The family name is actually Lambert.Age is incorrect for William but ages of Esther and William fit.

I have the following info about their marriage. Don't remember where I got it.
marriage:
Oct 1849 • Brighton, Sussex, England
Esther Campbell

William's occupation is "basket maker" in other terms, he was a travelling gypsy
Some of his children took on the name "Campbell" which is believed to be Esther's maiden name instead of Lambert. Would seem a slight to their father.

Thanks for the extra information.

The ages are quite off in 1841 aren't they if William and Esther are supposed to be the same age  :-\

Who does William 6 belong to?

Maybe they weren't officially married (I can't see your links posted earlier) and Campbell was technically their birth name.

William is their first born (see list above). I have most of their Christening records for the children. As per their Christening records, they were all born Lambert as their family name. I am really looking for Esther and William's marriage and parents. I was hoping their marriage record would give clues to their parents' names.

Yes if there was a marriage and we can find it would certainly help!

Where and what date was the first born Christened?

No Esther Campbell  baptism in Hampshire, no William Lambert baptism in Brighton that I can see.  :(

No marriage in either Sussex or Hampshire that I can find.

I don't think they married.

Informality as to marriage (and interchangeability as between mother’s and father’s surname) is fairly commonly found in gypsy/traveller family history.

yes, I have been blocked here for decades, my other 3 lines are French Canadian. SUPER easy to trace. Catholics are diligent about their sacrament records. Gypsies, not so much :(.

I see that the son “Aron” Lambert, aged 14 in 1871, was a nephew in the household of Alexander Campbell, a 45 yr old dealer in china and glass born in Chichester.

Living in Croydon in 1871: RG10/845/80/33.

Yes Alexander is William's brother. I believe I have his parents although not verified but Esther is a bit of a mystery.

Perhaps the following is their marriage record with a misspell on his family name:
William Barrett aged 21 m 6 Aug 1835 Esther Campbell Saint John Waterloo, Surrey, England

Alexander Campbell would be Esther’s brother, surely, rather than William’s?

This may be him with their mother in the hamlet of Durrants, Havant, in 1841:

John Hobbs 30 hawker of china Y
Esther Campbell 35 N  <<<
Alexander Campbell 15 hawker of china N <<<

The Esther Campbell of the 1835 Waterloo marriage was of the parish of St Leonard’s Shoreditch - doesn’t look an obvious match.

Baptism for Alexander Campbell: 27 Apr 1825 at St Peter the Great, Chichester.

It was also by licence which might be unlikely if they were itinerant workers.

She may in fact have been born in Portsea (and baptised in Chichester) - or she may have mistakenly thought she was born in Portsea if the family had connections to both places (her mother died there).

Or it may have been her husband who completed that 1861 census return and was mistaken.

Hi Kimberly,  I am your Australian relative and have been in contact with you previously.

Like you I have been looking for a marriage of William and Esther, a birth record for Esther and also the family in the 1851 Census.

In the 1841 Census, I think you will find that William is aged 1 year, not aged 6 as is mentioned in a previous post.  Perhaps in this census William possibly is 25 not 45 as in later census he drops 20 years from his listed age.

I did contact a records office about 5 years ago looking for a birth record for Esther.  This is the reply that I received back:

Alexander Campbell married Hester Whitney in Alverstoke in 1816

Only children for Alexander and [H]Esther in our index are Elizabeth and James baptized in 1817, and Selina in 1822.  The first two baptisms were in North Stoneham although the family was from Portsea.  The third baptism was in Farlington where the father was described as a traveller dealing in earthenware.  The possible inference is that being described as a traveller it meant that the family were in fact gypsies at that time, and so were highly mobile around the area which may account for the lack of baptisms.

The only baptisms I can find for Alexander Campbell is in 1813 to parents Alexander and Jane, and in 1814 to parents John and Ann, both in Portsea.

The only baptism I can find for Esther Campbell is in 1810 to parents Adam and Ann in 1810 in Portsea.

There is no marriage for William Lambour/Lambert to Esther/Hester in our marriage index to 1837 [although they may have married after this] and no baptisms for any of their children afterwards.  We have baptisms indexed up to 1874.  The conclusions is that the children were never baptized or maybe the family was non-conformists whose details we do not have in our index.

A number of William Lambert and Esther Campbell/Lambert's children were baptised in Surrey (Croydon).  I believe that there is also a daughter Sophia Lambert, baptized 25 May 1845.  She died as a child and was a quite unexpected find when researching the family.

Hi Cousin :),

I thought I had your email address from years ago but I don't seem to have it. I have sent you a message on Ancestry. Do you have access to Ancestry messages?

Hi Kimberly,  Will send you a PM with email address.  I have not renewed my subscription to Ancestry as it was getting quite expensive and research is coming to an end.

Regards Kay
