Title: Help finding information
Post by: xMrsKennedyx on Sunday 16 December 18 20:30 GMT (UK)
Hello. Im unsure if I should post this in WW1 OR WW2 but I could use some help.

My 2nd great uncle John McFarlane b.1893 and served in the 11th Battalion of Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders but I am unsure of dates. I have found a commonwealth grave and found out he died on 24th July 1944. His rank was Serjeant and his service number was 2970372.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could possibly find other information on his military history? And if he served in WW1 aswell?

Im relatively new to researching my family history, so any advice would be great!

Since he was serving after 1920 his records will still be held by the MOD, you can apply for them but there is a charge of £30. See the website for details.

Do you know where he would have been living in the WW1 time frame?

The last known address I can find for him was in 1912 on his marriage certificate which was 39 Back Street, Renton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

Hiya

It is really no problem. As long as those wishing to help know to read both threads.

It's a real waste of time/effort if those trying to help you duplicate the searching found "on the other thread"

[ and as long as you remember to read both ]  :)

Ensure that everything that you know is posted, too.

Good luck!
Ray

There don't appear to be any identifiable WW1 records for him.

That said, his earlier record may well be with his WW2 records which, as Jebber advises, you can apply for.
