Title: In need of help finding information.
Post by: xMrsKennedyx on Sunday 16 December 18 20:33 GMT (UK)
Hello. Im unsure if I should post this in WW1 OR WW2 but I could use some help.

My 2nd great uncle John McFarlane b.1893 and served in the 11th Battalion of Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders but I am unsure of dates. I have found a commonwealth grave and found out he died on 24th July 1944. His rank was Serjeant and his service number was 2970372.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could possibly find other information on his military history? And if he served in WW1 aswell?

Im relatively new to researching my family history, so any advice would be great!

You could look at Ancestry and findmypast as they both have war records on the site. Another site to look at is the British Forces site (https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk ).
Ancestry has WW1 records for a John McFarlane (draft papers etc.) - may be three different people her (listed with wife Christina Keir or mothers  Cecilia and Jane). FindMyPast seems to have his WW2 records including confirmation of his death and burial at Vale of Lethen (unfortunately the site is not working very well at this moment and just died on me - but there were several records there, I just could not see if they were all of the same John). I do not have a current subscription with the Forces site, but can see at least two records for that service number
Cheers

His service record is held by the MOD and not available online. You can apply for a copy, cost £30.

This link gives details of how to apply:
