Have just listened to some of this programme this morning, very interesting, about setting up of the poor law unions and workhouses.
An abridged version is repeated at 9pm tonight, but I presume one can listen to the original 9am broadcast on the iPlayer.

It was very good - well worth a listen.

“Crossing Continents” just started - it’s about DNA testing!

I used to wake up to Radio 4 on my radio alarm and have it on for most of the day, but I got so fed up with the Today programme and its political bias (and it's extremely rude presenters both male and female) that I switched to ClassicFM and I've not listened to Radio 4 for at least 2 years now. I do miss Desert Island Discs and In Our Time and a few other programmes but I just forget to turn the radio in the kitchen to Radio 4 for a few programmes.

Thanks for the reminder - I heard part of it this morning, but would probably have forgotten the repeat.

I like Martin Bragg ,he did a splendid programme a year or so ago on Being Northern.Revived a bit of pride in me !
We did The Poor Laws at school and how people were moved from parish to parish to,save the expense of feeding paupers etc.
A very harsh time in our history and the bigotry of the wealthy churchgoers
who were not at all Christian at heart .
Dickens did not exaggerate,
Viktoria.
P.S I am going to read Sybil,by Disraeli, which illustrates such things very well.V.

I wish I had been able to catch this programme, as I am quite interested in this subject.
Mind sometimes, it feels like we are heading back into past times on account of austerity.
The other day I was walking down Northumberland Street in Newcastle and I almost felt I was in Victorian times. There were people begging, people calling out there wares and there was also someone sitting on the ground playing a flute or a tin whistle I am not sure exactly.

I'm a big fan too, he always manages to make the most difficult subjects understandable. I believe all his programmes are available as 'podcasts' to download on your 'BBC Sounds app' ;)
