Title: Looking for information on ancestors from the Isle of Tyree
Post by: fire on Friday 21 December 18 00:41 GMT (UK)
Hi I'm looking for information on my great great grandfather.  All i know is his name is Angus Kennedy from the Isle of Tyree.  He had a son Donald who migrated to Australia sometime in the early 1800's

Hi,

I think you need to post a bit more detail as early 1800s is a bit vague?

Do you have a rough idea of the yr Angus was born?
Did he emigrate alone or with a spouse?
Did he marry in Aus & have kids?
Do you have dates for his children, where/when born & names in order as the Scottish naming pattern can be useful if it was used?

This has been posted on the Aberdeen board i.e. I will ask a Moderator to move it to the Argyll board where Tyree/Tiree would come under.

I assume you are referring to Tyree, an island and parish Inner Hebrides, Argyllshire.
As mentioned if you can narrow down the date you will probably find the answer on Scotland People a pay to view site, below is the result of a search from 1750 – 1820.

KENNEDY   ANGUS   JOHN KENNEDY                                   15/02/1786   Tyree
KENNEDY   ANGUS   JOHN KENNEDY/ANN MCLEAN      06/08/1795   Tyree
KENNEDY   ANGUS   NIEL KENNEDY/FLORY KENNEDY      07/10/1804   Tyree
KENNEDY   ANGUS   NIEL KENNEDY/CATHARENE MACLEAN   02/10/1803   Tyree

I expect fire is confusing the Isle of Tiree with the parish of Tyrie (which is not an island) in Aberdeenshire.

Whilst Tyrie Aberdeen is a possibility there were no Kennedy births there 1700 to 1850 and only one female marriage in 1766.

For Tyree (Tiry/Tiree) you should also consider searching under McCualrig (or variations) when searching for Kennedy.

Donald Kennedy appears to have married Alice Roberts Hardman on 1.9.1858 and celebrated Diamond Wedding in September 1918 (per The Age, 2.9.1918, page 1).

Yes I’ve discovered that Donald ennedy married Alice Roberts hardman here in Australia.  It was in there diamond wedding notice in the paper that I saw Donald’s father was Angus from the Isle of Tyree.  We have had an extremely hard time trying to find anything on the Kennedy side after this

All I know about Donald is he was born in 1840 & passed away in 1923.  He married Alice Roberts Hardman in 1858 at St Luke’s in Emerald Hill (which is now South Melbourne). They had several children one who is my great grandfather Angus Edgar Kennedy. I have a photo here from there diamond wedding anniversary and also the newspaper article mentioning that he is the son of Angus Kennedy from the Isle of Tyree

This notice has no mention of father, or Tyree -

The Age 2 Sep 1918 p8
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/155131372?

Is there another notice.....can you identify it please.....newspaper title and date.

The notice in The Age gives an arrival date of 1839. Donald would be very young, so possibly arrived with family?

You need to see the marriage certificate to find useful information for researching your family.

How can he have arrived in 1839 if he was born in 1840? His age at death seems to suggest a birth in 1832/1833. And if he did arrive as a young child, presumably his father died in Australia, so you need to find records of his father there to see if they tell you the name of his father. What about the marriage record in 1858? Does it name his parents?

There is a marriage of Angus Kennedy to Ann McIntyre in Glasgow in 1823. A daughter Anne was baptised in Glasgow Gorbals in 1825. You can view the originals of these records at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost.

From the newspaper extracts it seems clear that Angus Kennedy had died before Mary's marriage.

From The Argus, 13 September 1862: On the 9th inst, at Reilly-street, Fitzroy, Mrs Ann Kennedy, relict of the late Mr Angus Kennedy, aged sixty-one. That puts her birth as 1800/1801, which would fit with a marriage in 1823. There are two deaths of Ann(e) Kennedys in the Victoria deaths index in 1862. Have you looked at either of these?

Also from The Argus, on 18 and 19 August 1857: THE Friends of the late Mr ANGUS KENNEDY,
Joiner, are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment in the New Cemetery.
The funeral procession to move from his late residence B??h Cottage, 34 Licenter-street, on Wednesday, 19th inst at three o'clock p.m. CROFT and MU??RAY, Undertaker, 82 Madeline-street, North Melbourne. 271 aug 19. There is a death of Angus Kennedy in the Victoria deaths index in 1857. Have you looked at this?

There is this 25 yr old Donald Kennedy a labourer who can read and write
Per Aurora, to Geelong, 7 Dec 1848

I cannot work out the place he is from I attach a clip.
Added. kilnally, Inverness?

There is also a 5 yr old Donald arriving  in 1839 with a large group of Kennedys but his parents are Charles and Cora (although he has brother Angus 14)

Kilmallie is the parish in which Fort William is situated. It is not in the county of Argyll and it is not on an island.

Still not an island, and not near Tiree.

The point is just that this Donald Kennedy from Kilmallie who arrived in 1848 isn't the one that fire is looking for, who arrived in 1839 and whose father was from Tiree.

Reply 2 by Colin and Reply 17 by Forfarian would suggest the 1795 entry in Tyree is probably yours:-
Angus Kennedy to John Kennedy, Muirstadt and Ann McLean.
Hopefully you can confirm your Angus's mother's maiden name !

I don't think you are at that stage yet. You need to see those two death certificates to see what else they tell you before you start trying to look for Angus Kennedy's parents. For instance, was the Angus Kennedy who died in 1857 the father of your Donald/husband of Ann McIntyre? How old was he when he died? When did he emigrate to Australia?

There are many people whose baptisms are missing from the surviving records, so you cannot assume, just because there is only one possible candidate, that it is the right person.

How do you know that Charles and Cora Kennedy were the parents of Donald, aged 5? Does the passenger list specifically say so, or could Charles have been a brother or cousin of Angus, bringing Angus' family to join him once he had got himself settled in Australia? Have you found the deaths of Charles and Cora, and if so what do they tell you?

That was me who put up the Charles and Cora parents of Donald.
The passenger list says Donald is their son.

I just posted it because it was the right year  for immigration  incase Angus turned out to be fictitious.  And at that stage you hadn’t posted the potential Angus and Ann deaths.

Ah, yes. I think the plot thickens.

Though there do seem to be lots of mentions in Trove of other Donald Kennedys.
