Title: what is a husbandsman?
Post by: pamissearching!!! on Friday 28 December 18 11:21 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the marriage of William Price to a Jane Harrison approx late 1770`s. Their eldest child Elizabeth was baptized at Chester le Street in 1780. She was born 2nd July 1780. Her bap record shows that William was a husbandman from Harraton Outside. Does anyone know what a husbandman was and where would Harraton Outside be? She had 5 younger sibling baptized at Monkwearmouth. Many thanks :)

A Husbandman was someone who tended farm animal.

I can only surmise that Harraton Outside was a local description for an area close to Harraton.

Northumberland and Durham FHS have a Marriage at Elwick Hall 23 November 1779 between a William Price and a Jane Harrison. What I presume is the same marriage is on Durhamrecordsonline in the Hartlepool district, however this is a pay to view site and I don't have any credits.

Agreed: census returns for Walsall here in the Black Country show the area divided into "Walsall Borough" and "Walsall Foreign" (which sounds a lot more exotic than it is...)

Outside was a place just north of Harraton. Here's Outside Hall  https://maps.nls.uk/view/102341518#zoom=5&lat=7627&lon=5338&layers=BT

On this side by side map Outside Hall is called Harraton Hall https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15&lat=54.8857&lon=-1.5486&layers=6&right=BingHyb

It is William Brass on this Genuki list, based (I think) on a different transcription.

thank you. That marriage date is perfect. I had wondered about William Brass but seeing the other one in Hartlepool I have to choose. Is Hartlepool close by to the chester le street / Harraton area? I imagine Harranton is gone now?

Since you are in Australia you a probably unfamiliar with localities in the UK. I suggest you take a look at maps for the areas your people are from, you will get a much better understanding of where they lived and be less likely to connect to the wrong people. That is what I do for places I am unfamiliar with, particularly when it come to other countries.

Harraton is still easily found on a map.

I am looking for the marriage of William Price to a Jane Harrison

Where did you find Jane's maiden name? it doesn't appear on ELizabeth's baptism on the Bishops transcripts. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6SHW-DT5?i=162&wc=9K59-6TG%3A13618101%2C16337901%2C16337902&cc=1309819

Speaking for myself I wouldn't 'choose' until I had some really convincing evidence. The two surnames are n't particularly uncommon  :-\

Jane` maiden name is on the bapt of some of her siblings. I have looked up Elwick Hall and I also can see that there are children baptized to William Brass and Jane so not a mistake. I have counted that marriage out.  :)
