Title: Norman Ashton search help
Post by: craigashton68 on Saturday 29 December 18 15:11 GMT (UK)
i am researching my family tree on ancestry.com but i am struggling to find information on my grandfather and wondered if anybody could help me a little.
info gained so far is-
Norman D Ashton born 27th nov 1914 in Oswestry
married to Constance Elizabeth Peet 1940
on a birth index it says his mothers maiden name was Richards
He died in 1980 in Shardlow, Derbyshire
I would love any info on him and his parents if anybody can help at all.

The most conclusive way is to apply for his birth certificate to get details of his parents but will have a look round  :)

Have you looked for a marriage for his parents - Ashton/Richards in the area he was born?

There is a family tree, possibly yours?  with his mother as Maria Helen Richards born 1890 Oswestry daughter of Alfred & Sarah.

Thank you your quick reply. The tree you are referring to is mine and i have took a guess at Maria Richards to see where it leads (could be wrong but worth a try) but can't find anything on Norman Ashtons father at all.

I can't see a marriage for Maria Helen Richards to a Mr Ashton but as both surnames are on his birth registration I would definitely get the birth certificate for more information.

Mar 1915 Oswestry
Ashton Norman D Richards
6a 1144

There is a possible match for her and still single in 1939 - possibly dying in 1958.

You really need his birth certificate to take this any further back.

Confused me now Rosie - are we saying Edith Austin was originally Edith Richards and was widowed then married Mr Ashton?

Right think I'm following

1901

Charles Austin 21
Edith 25 born Montford Shropshire
Edith M 2 months

Possible death for Charles in 1903 - haven't checked age yet **

** age 23

It looks that way from that 1911 entry.  I still think the birth certificate for Norman is needed just to confirm if they are the right family.  No point in following the wrong family backwards.

Edith Richards appears to have married Charles Austin 13 Feb 1900 at Chorlton cum Hardy, St Clement, Lancashire. The image is on Ancestry

Looks pretty good to me, Rosie.  Good find.

I was just about to say that it could be a second marriage, when I saw that you'd worked it through  :)

Agree that the birth cert will still be needed to confirm - nothing as yet in the Shropshire PRs.

Let us know what the certificate says when you get it.  :)  You can get a PDF copy from the GRO link I posted for around £6 (due to increase in February)
