Title: Ancestry Subscription
Post by: LEMB on Sunday 30 December 18 18:50 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I usually buy the worldwide subscription for a year on Ancestry but now its only letting me pick a 1 month or 6 month subscription - has the yearly one stopped being offered?

there is a 50% off for the premium one for a full year but i do alot of worldwide searches so that would not benefit me :(

THANKS x

I did earlier in the month using that link. Though I'd tried phoning them to see if they'd just honour it without me doing anything and was told by the (quite snappish) young man that there was no such offer available. I just said ok so I'll just cancel then.

set my own sub to not auto re-new (and the original card had expired anyway)

I save absolutely zilch on ancestry (no tree, no nothing) so renewed as my OH, and the 3 weeks or or so still on my own sub was donated to someone else - its nice to be nice :-)

Win win situation :-)

That link works and has done for a few years. All you need to do is cancel your subscription and wait until it runs out. As soon as it has done that you can renew as a new subscriber. If you try and do it before your old subscription has lapsed it doesn't work.

If your sub has lapsed, its not a renewal.  I have renewed on this offer for 3 years, offer has been available now since 2016 - it may have slipped under the radar so probably best not draw it to there attention  :-\

As i pay an annual subscription for FindMyPast i have been paying monthly for Ancestry (it is my only hobby and i use both every day), but at £19.99 a month that is really expensive compared to the offer. Must look into moving (though i would need to remember to untick the automatic renewal box).

I just cancelled my sub to The Genealogist and got an email within a coup,e of days offering me three months free as I was an old customer!

I did the same, cancelled last year and got that offer this year. I took it up, without adding my credit card. I've just realised I've hardly used it though so won't be subscribing to it.

My premium sub expired at about 22:12 on Friday evening, re-subscribed through the link for Worldwide an hour and a bit later, could have done it earlier but was doing some stuff for work remotely. :)  Being back working again, treated myself to worldwide again. ;)

That said, I did purchase a DNA test from Black Friday, just got to get round to doing it ...

Thanks smudwhisk, i was going to ask how long you had to leave it before re-subscribing. I assume everything saved properly (bit worried about losing things 🤔).

You won't loose anything Deirdre. I've just cancelled my renewal with Ancestry and I'll still be able to see everything till my sub runs out on 26 Jan.
After that I'll be able to see all my tree but not the documents attached to them if they came from ancestrys site. Anything I've added from elsewhere I can see.
You'll still be able to look at documents that are free on the site too.

I'm going to take out a new sub using the link after the 26th.... keeping fingers crossed it'll work!

Once your monthly sub has run out, you should be able to subscribe on that new fabulous deal without losing anything.  Things should be the same as they were.

You can still see everything from Ancestry as long as you’ve downloaded and attached them rather than just attaching them. I’m gradually working through my tree doing this.

Sadly i’ve not downloaded anything yet, just attached everything 🙄.

It was only recently that i read about the need to download records too.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, my monthly sub runs from the 1st so won’t rush to do it today (need to check when the payment goes out!) but will get it set up for next month 😀

Happy new year all 🥂

It’s a family history group on Facebook. The same link was posted. One has been sorted, a rolling monthly sub (like mine is) hasn’t yet run out so he’ll try again later in the month. Not heard back from the one who cancelled a while back.

I think this was the one I took up back in May 2018.

I usually cancel then wait until I find a good offer.  The problem I have with this is that I have to use a different email address and a user name. With the result I have so many different email addresses and usernames. :) Although I use the same credit card.

If I try and use the same username it says it is not available.

This offer was great because it was half the price of an OZ subscription.

My Ancestry and FindMyPast memberships are up for renewal in the next couple of months so will have to try these codes again.

Did you find both discounts from threads on RC? I paid £132 for FindMyPast last year so getting it for £80 would be amazing!

My sub for ancestry runs out in January and I wasn't sure whether to cancel it now as I don't want auto renew... but wonder whether it will let me carry on until that date or stopne immediately from accessing my details especially as my DNA was done via them...

I'm not sure how you would do this, as surely it isn't recognised as your subscription if it isn't in your name or email? I wonder if you could you make "that person" manager of your dna details?

If you didn't give them updated card details, I'd be asking my bank why they paid it and requesting a refund.
Even if it was the same card number, surely the expiry date would have been different on the new one and therefore the payment should have been declined?

Even if you did'nt cancel the auto-renewal i would e-mail and ask them to refund the subscription payment.  Leave it a few days and then renew on one of the offers listed on this thread or the latest thread mentioning the offer which we have been using for years.

Log into your Ancestry Account

Click on your user name, top right of the screen
Choose Account settings
In the Membership section is shows when your current sub renews automatically
Cancel the membership

Now you won't be automatically charged the £179.99 the day its due.

Once your membership has expired, login into your account, the membership will now say you are a registered guest.

Stay logged in and then click on the link that Sandra posted
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/offers/subscribe?dna=crossAct

That recognises you as a registered guest and will offer the reduced price

NB you wont see the offer while your sub is still active.

Has your sub actually expired?
When you log into your account, does it show you are now a registered guest?
Was your account a .co.uk  one?

I've just tried it out with a registered guest account that satisfies all the above criteria, stayed logged in, clicked the link Sandra posted and the offer does come up. I clicked the option I wanted (£89.99 for a 12 month world wide sub) and it took me through to a payment screen for that amount. I don't want it, so canceled out of the screen but 'would' have been able to continue and pay that price.

Thanks for reverting.
Sub expired July.  Yes, a Registered Guest.  Yes to .co.uk
Annual Worldwide is quoted £179.99 (when Stg is selected as opposed to €).
I suspect that as it's an Irish sub that the offer is not available - I have also tried with a .com login.
Last deal I got was 6 months from January at £5 per month for Premium Membership.

I think I have seen others with a .ie expired sub saying it didn't work as its a .co.uk offer page.
I've not heard of anyone with a .ie expired sub who said it worked for them, but hopefully someone with more knowledge of .ie accounts may come up with a suggestion about a current offer that works for you.

Thanks again.
Ironically there is not an Irish Ancestry site.  .ie just transfers you to .co.uk  Only recently has the pricing had the Euro payment option become available.
Probably this deal is not available as it recognises the Country of origin of the ISP.

Not sure why it shouldn't work for Ireland as people in the US, New Zealand and Australia can use it.

Your status will go to being a "guest", rather than a member. As such you will be able to access any tree you have in the site, but searching for new records will not enable you to see the images etc for any results.
BUT you should be able to click on the link and take advantage of the 'offer' as long as you are logged into your, now classed as guest, account.
Its been tried and tested for a long time

Basically followed the above instructions.  But when I went to click on the "discount link" I used a VPN to set my computer to UK.  (i.e. - It would look as if it was accessing Ancestry from the UK).  It opened on an Ancestry page that I had never seen before, with all the reduced pricing on it.  Picked the one I wanted and paid with my normal Debit Card.

That's great, and glad you were successful! Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is it easy to get a VPN and how would I go about getting one?

Yes, easy to get.  Google VPN, you will have loads of options.  I went with a seven day free trial with AVG as I know them.

That's really annoying, wait a few more weeks and then cancel so the same thing doesn't happen next year! They don't make it easy, you have to make sure you follow it right through and get an email confirming.

Thank you, as it has worked for me today.
I followed the advice
- stay logged in as a guest (as my subscription has expired a few days ago)
- keep clicking on the link (but kept getting the £99 for six months)

It may have been co-incidence, but I then copied the link and sent to my son (via FB messaging) to see if he could get it to work, as I wasn't getting any success. After I sent it to him, I tried once again by opening the link I had sent him (in the messenger), and it worked  :)

Hi,

I use Ancestry.ca and I don't currently have an active subscription.   Good news....I signed in to the Ancestry UK site, using my usual Ancestry sign in information, then clicked on Sandra's link.  I was able to see her 50 percent off offer.  :) :).

FYI - Ancestry.ca sent me an email today, saying that their 6 month subs are now half price until Jan 10...Canada Discovery Plus 41.99 CDN, Worldwide 64.99 CDN.   I think I will go with Ancestry.ca for 6 months.   When that sub is done, I will try Sandra's Ancestry UK 50 percent offer.   Always nice to save some money :) :)

Have Ancestry finally stopped this?  Has anyone had any success in the past few days (since 9th May)?  Today, for me, the link offers only rolling 1 month or 6 month options, not annual.  I've used the offer in the past and know that sometimes it's been necessary to refresh the screen to see the annual options, but this time I've refreshed the screen multiple times, cleared cookies and tried again, tried both a tablet and my phone, still no change.  I'm in the UK and logged in as a registered guest.

I've had the new home page for a couple of weeks now, I'm wondering if the update is more than cosmetic.

I just tested it with registered user account I have. I am in the UK too.
logged into the account, opened a new tab and went to the link. Page came up with the usual offer.
I did click through (chose the worldwide option) and it opened up the payment page which tells me its £89.99 and it will auto renew after a year at £179.99.
(and then I closed it all down as I don't want to buy a sub)
So it looks like its still functional.

ermm as far as I know its a new one but, hand in the air, I don't usually go to the homepage anyway.

I usually either use my own bookmarks to go to regularly visited databases on ancestry or I go to the card catalogue page  to see what's available for a particular place/area.

That's a shame, if the link doesn't pop up right away, "chatters" usually persevere and have a good result in the end.
You need to have cancelled your previous subscription and not auto renewed, so that your subscription has lapsed.  Log into your normal ancestry account as a guest, on another tab, click the offer link shown.
Still in difficulty - try - Try -  right-clicking the link, save it to your desktop as an html file and open it in your browser. This method worked for someone the other day.

The link appears to have stopped working - reported on a lot of genealogy forums, not just here. However if you phone them and ask about offers, people are saying they have been given a 50% discount. The link wouldn’t have given you the discount yet anyway, as it only worked once your subscription had expired. It might be better to wait until nearer that time to call them.

I have tried the link with every bit of advice on here, with a lapsed subscription & different devices/browsers. Nothing has worked so far & I suspect it lapsed when everyone moved to the new, all singing, all dancing system. I am now considering what to do, as it's not cheap :-[

These are the threads with the latest information regarding ancestry subscriptions.

One of the better ways to try and get the discount is by using the ancestry "Chat" facility.
RootsChatters have been lucky enough to get £89-99 (12 months worldwide)  £59-99 (UK Premier Membership)

I have phoned Ancestry just now and was given Worldwide for £89.99. I’m delighted to get it. The girl was very helpful and friendly.

Hello.

I have just had an email offering me half price Premium membership for £59.99. I could have contacted them to see if I could upgrade, but I am happy without the Worldwide bit. I haven't used that part half as much as other areas. So I am rather happy now  :)

Had you just let your sub lapse?
When cancelling and they ask why, I always tick the "can't afford it" box.

Just rung Ancestry and been told there is no offer for World only for Premium (up to 9 Jan).  World is what I need. I am not a recent subscriber but apparently was in 2006. Is it worth trying via chat?

Yes, definitely try the chat avenue.  You just never know but don't give up.

Success! Tried the chat, totally baffled by it so rang up again. Different agent and this time got the 50% discount on World. Clearly pays to keep trying!

My worldwide subscription expired yesterday.  Renewal for 2024 was £179.99. Went on chat line and was told no offers or discounts available whatsoever.
Rang  and spoke to a very nice person who offered me renewal at 89.99 so definitely worth ringing!

There's more than one topic on RC where you can find a code to use that offer online, after letting your subscription expire. I used it the day after mine expired in December. Several people have confirmed it is working since. It's worth saving the link and keeping an eye on the thread for any updates for next year ;)

It did disappear for a short time around the time of my renewal a couple of years ago. Like you I phoned support and very nicely explained that I had been offered a WW sub for £89.99 the previous couple of years, and I wondered if it would be possible again? The agent processed it for me :)

Thanks for this info Aspen… think I might try this option, was it for an annual or 6 months the £89.99?

I cancelled mine in December and it ran to the expiry date. Once it had run out I just clicked Sandra’s link and it restarted immediately as it is holding my card details.  Last year I tried phoning and got no offer the first time so had to try again the next day.  It must be worth trying Sandra’s link first, there are lots of people who are getting good results from it

Thanks rosie… I did have a web chat on ancestry site as couldn’t cancel my sub and they’ve offered me a 50% discount if I call back on the cancellation date quoting a number they’ve given me.. so I’m going to try that as it works out the same cost as the link Sandra’s given.

Glad that you have been able to sort it out and will be able to get the discount.
