Searching for any records on a Mary Burke, who was married to Edward Sadler (Edward was born Liverpool, 1851). She was mother to Robert Edward Sadler (born Liverpool, 1871). The only records that I have of her are on Robert's birth certificate (which provides her maiden name, Burke) and Robert's baptism record (the family lived on Devon Street).
In the 1881 census, Edward and his son, Robert, are living in Shrewsbury. Edward is described as a widower. However, I cannot find a marriage certificate for Mary and Edward, and nor can I find a death certificate for her anytime between 1871-1881, which makes finding a birth certificate extremely difficult! Edward is my 3 x great grandfather.
I have all the information I need about Edward, but I would really love to have some more information on Mary e.g. her birth, marriage or death, so if anyone was able to help then I would be most grateful, thank you!

That's really useful, thank you! Seems very likely that that is him in 1871. It's just so frustrating that I can't find a marriage certificate around then for him and Mary.

Thanks, Rosie, I will look into it. Not sure why she would be in the Birmingham area but from the age it seems like it's most likely to be her.

all places of birth match the 1881 census and the 1861 though Edward's birth year seemms variable the others are constistent

this is perhaps an obvious question but just wanted to check that on Robert's birth certificate his mother is named as Mary FORMERLY Burke.
If they were not actually married Robert could be registered in his fathers name and his mother just named as Mary Burke

I would need to check the birth certificate. I assumed from the 1881 census which had Edward down as a widower that they were married but could this be wrong?

UPDATE: had a look at the birth certificate and it does indeed say 'Mary Sadler, formerly Burke', yet I have had absolutely no luck finding anything like a marriage record. Did people every try to cover up illegitimacy on birth certificates at that time by feigning marriage?
