Title: Rose Dorothy Gillick
Post by: westskip on Friday 11 January 19 09:06 GMT (UK)
I am attempting to find the death of Rose Dorothy Gillick who was born in Australia on 29 Sept. 1886, emigrated to USA in the 1920's and was became a US citizen. She returned to Australia in 1955 with the intention of retiring.
She apparently left Australia on the "Pioneer Gem" on 13 June 1956 presumably to return to USA and we have been unable to find any record of her returning to Australia after that date. She apparently died in USA and the only other clue we have is that she spent a considerable time living in New York.
 John.

Previous threads, only death place undiscovered

The US census only goes up to the 1940's due to privacy restrictions.

Rose Dorothy Gillick with the birth date 28/9/1886  does not appear on the USA SSDI (social security death index) which was up and running by 1962 ish

A Mrs. Rose Gillick appears frequently in N.Y. papers, including this helpful mention-
New York Irish American Advocate, [dated 1944]: CAVAN LADIES CONDOLE At the regular monthly meeting of the Cavan Ladies S. & B. Ass'n, held Tuesday evening, March 21, at the Central Opera House, the following resolutions were passed unanimously. That we, the officers and Members

Didn't realise there were FOUR previous threads  ::)

Interesting address. The area has been redeveloped during my lifetime but seems that 104 Clinton Ave. was still standing a few years ago (the newspaper site doesn't allow me to see the content because I'm in the U.K.)-
Stamford Advocate, 6 Oct.2016: Another historic Stamford home bites the dust - For 18 years, the historic mansion at 102-104 Clinton Ave. served as transitional housing for homeless young men who, despite ...

Added- I believe it may be the green house shown on Streetview image in 2014- LINK (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/104+Clinton+Ave,+Stamford,+CT+06901,+USA/@41.0494984,-73.5446974,3a,75y,179.74h,87.2t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sagM7c9ZzGnw6LDmZ5Zh1xQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c2a1e30aaaddab:0xc080ec3fcdc6799a!8m2!3d41.0505963!4d-73.5447235)
Unfortunately moving closer along the street the next image is from 2017 and house has been replaced by a very modern building.

This death certificate would not be public until 2034, so uncovering where this Rose Gillick is, might be the answer. Possibly someone would have to actually pay for it to get an answer.

I'd think this was her

She may have been cremated or buried

If the Mrs. Rose Gillick mentioned frequently in N.Y. papers is her then it's possible her mother died in Cavan in 1943.

Thank you every one.
Our Rose Dorothy Gillick never married (to the best of our knowledge) and was a nurse with the Australian Army during WW1 (one of the Anzac Girls) and after moving to USA became a private nurse to a very wealthy New York couple. Travelled the world with them and lived in their apartment on Park Ave.
With an Irish ancestry she may well have had some contact with a "Cavan Society" which is another clue for us in our search for the Irish connection.
Thank you again.

If the Mrs. Rose Gillick mentioned frequently in N.Y. papers is her then it's possible her mother died in Cavan in 1943.

The father died in Adelaide in 1928
http://www.campbelltown.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=4613&c=25005

It says the 6 children (including Rose) were from his fist marriage. So his widow in 1928 had no children. Not sure if this means he was separated from the mother of his six children or was remarried as he was a widower?

Some of this may have already been posted elsewhere.

1937 Rose Dorothy Gillick, single, born 24 Sept.1886 South Australia arrived in U.S. from Japan via Canada. Address was 2220 Park Ave., N.Y.C. (there in 1940 U.S. Census).
Naturalization record (petition 1936) shows her as a 'graduate nurse' so she might have been working at Stamford Hospital (probably about 15 walk from Clinton Ave.).

Therefore, she can't be the Mrs. Rose Gillick from newspaper articles or the Rose Gillick whose mother died in Cavan in 1944.

I can't see a Rose Gillick death in Connecicut.

With an Irish ancestry she may well have had some contact with a "Cavan Society" which is another clue for us in our search for the Irish connection.
I've already said several times that this is a Mrs. Rose Gillick whose mother was in Ireland.

This has been mentioned previously - Rose was a nurse for a family at Park Avenue in 1940 (as shown on that census)

It would appear that Rose Gillick had passed away before 1962 ish - no SSDI entry for her.

Unfortunately, it may mean purchasing the death certificate for the Rose Gillick (quoted above) to see if she is the correct one or eliminate her from the search - she appears to be of the correct age.  ???

New York City does limit who can obtain death certificates.  There is more information here about who can get them - https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/services/death-certificates.page
