Evening all. I am trying to track down the death of my Paternal Grt GrandMother Frances Mina Beatrice Thurston. Her 1st marriage was to Frederick Donlan (often mis-transcribed as DOULAN) after Fredericks death she married Herbert Thompson.
My Dad remembers his Grand Mother in India. He was born 1937, the family left India in 1949 by which time Frances had died. Interestingly she is shown on my Dads Baptism certificate as his God Mother.
Any help in tracking down her death would be appreciated. Thank you
-
Was she ever known by a pet name ? There is a Bessie Thomson death in 1942 on Findmypast
-
Thank you Ruth. Ive had a look at the record, unfortunately this is not my Grt Nan.
I will keep looking. Best regards
-
Family Search have her second marriage record, without an image, but believe it can be viewed at an LDS History Centre.
Herbert James Thompson born 1887 age 34.
Father Richard James Thompson.
Marriage 30 March 1921 at Nagpur Bengal India,, to
Frances Miana Beatrice Doulan age 35 Widowed.
This shows yet another spelling variation of her middle name for Frances.
-
brionne Thank you for this. So frustrating that I cannot locate her death
-
Have you thoroughly explored all the possible passenger lists for her whereabouts prior to the rest of the family returning to Uk in 1949.
What was her husbands occupation.Nagpur was a large railway junction.
Perhaps she remarried for a third time in India,or assumed another surname.
Suspect she could be buried in India under a different surname.
Sorry not much help but I have no paid for subs to search from at present.
Its not an easy task to find her death.

Evening whiteout7
Thank you for taking the time to give me this information. I was actually already aware of the siblings, although I am not 100% with George. I will have to look into that one.
With regard to my Grt Grandmother, Frances Minna Beatrice Thurston/Donlan/Thompson, I have spoken to my Dad & he can remember her dying at their house in Agra around 1945./ I was hoping that would be the key to finding her death record, but unfortunatly Ive again spent hours tonight with no luck! Any help appreciated.
-
Still on the case for her correct death.
Do you already have the correct facts as to her whereabouts during WW2,are you sure it was Agra.
Would it be possible that she was living in Burma during her second marriage,
where records have gaps I believe, due to the awful turmoil after the Jap invasion, with Europeans trying to escape.
Also may I ask her religion please.
-
The facts are all correct as my Dad can vividly remember his Nana.
They used to sleep on the veranda of the house in Ajmer Rd, Agra. He remembers her dying on the veranda.
My Dads family resided permenantly in Agra until they came to England in 1949.
we believe Frances to be Catholic but may have been Anglican.
-
Does the local Catholic Church have a graveyard? Your dad might know?
St. Mary’s Church, Agra
8, Ajmer Road, Pratap Pura, Adarsh Nagar, Shahzadi Mandi, Rakabganj, Agra.
Also if she died in 1945 ish then in most countries you would have to pay for her death certficate as it is not 100 years past since she died?
The only way around this would be to find her burial through non-government sources
-
I wonder?
Thompson

amended: seems quite a way from Agra but could it have been where Catholics had to go and be buried in 1945?
-
This looks death promising.great find Whiteout7,,,more or less correct age.
Did your family have connections in Bangalore.
We really now need to know your family occupation in India, please.
Also the British Library holds many records from Indian Churches, which I understand show causes of death in many later records mid 19th century onwards.
-
Oh my days, this is the nearest I've seen to my Grt Grandmothers death details. It just seems so far from Agra (over1000 miles). We have no connection to Bangalore.
My Family dates back (so far) to 1787 in India with mainly military connections. Frances's father (Robert) was a baker in London before he headed to India in around 1871. Her Mother was the Daughter of a Sgt Major at Fort William.
I really appreciate your help on this, and reading your posts it sounds like you are as keen to solve this mystery as I am. Thank you again. Lets keep searching!

I can't imagine why the Thompsons would move her from Agra to Bangalore either doesn't seem practical.
St Mary's church on Ajmer Road has a facebook page, maybe we could ask them if they have historic records?

-
Yes,good idea.
Have no further free records to search myself,so will leave you to it. Good luck.

Brianne, thank you for your help. Really appreciate it

UPDATE: I've sent a couple of emails to the church but no reply as yet.
My Dad has spoken to his older sister. She can remember their Nana dying in Agra and has vague memories of the funeral being across the road from where they lived, likely to be St Marys. Wish they would respond!

Hi brionne
This is Frances MB's Daughter, My Nanas Sister.
-
Update: I have spoken to my Dads older Sisters who both stated that FMB died on 15 June 1947, their Brothers 15th Birthday.
Both remember FMB being placed on the veranda surrounded by ice to keep her cool.
Even with this information I am struggling to find her.
Any idea who I need to approach for a copy of her death certificate?
Any help appreciated.
-
Have had yet another thorough search of listed British India records but found nothing..
Suggest the only answer is to approach the British Library for help.
