Title: Long-shot; date photo of young man please, WRY probably Stocksbridge
Post by: Claire64 on Monday 14 January 19 14:53 GMT (UK)
This photo is among my family photos but I have no idea who or when.  I think he looks about 16 years old.
He's wearing a ring - is this unusual?
Trouser turn-ups are very large
There's a badge of some description on his jacket but even scanning at high resolution doesn't make it any clearer.  I'll post the close-up in the second post.

Higher resolution scan of the badge, not sure if someone will recognise it.  Like I say, a bit of a long shot!

His suit style was popular from just before ww1 & into the early 1920's.
The collar pin would put it closer to 1920.

The shape of the badge looks a bit like a Fire Brigade badge.

Thanks jim1, I noticed the pin on the collar but couldn't work out what it was - what purpose did it serve?

Trishanne, well after a lot of debate we think this photo could possibly be my grandad, born 1906, or one of his brothers (born 1904, 1909).  Their father was in the fire brigade, so it's certainly a possibility.

I am attaching another photo, of my grandad (b.1906)... can anyone see a resemblance?

I think it could be the same young man taken a couple of years later. Maybe age around  14 in the first one and 16ish in the second one.

I agree with Carol. The only differences in the features are a change of hairstyle and a couple of years maturity (unless one of the other boys bore a strong resemblance to your grandad).

Don't agree I'm afraid. Mouth & nose are different. Nose is narrower also eyes are deeper set in 3. Mouth is fuller in 3.

Hmm..jury's out on this one then!  Even my relatives can't agree if it's the same person. I think it isn't the same person, possibly a brother, but then again it could be someone else entirely!  How I wish my nan had written on ALL the photographs!

Having had a look in Photoshop more closely I have changed my mind, the ears are different, but I think they are definitely related.

He is such a nice looking young man I just couldn't resist trying to bring him to life a little.  I left the background alone in order to focus on him.

Wow John-76, what a wonderful job you have done!  I've only just seen this as I have been ill.  Thank you; I am glad to claim him as family (we all seem to be agreed that if it isn't my grandad it must be a close relation, perhaps his brother).  It really does bring him to life doesn't it.  THANK YOU!

Having another shot at this.  Does anyone think this young man looks like the original photo?  This is my nan's father Thomas Marsh Crossley.  No relation to the Donkersleys, although she married one.

I don't think they are the same, the ears are different and the parting.

This is taken much earlier than than the other two, around 1908-12ish so possibly the Father of the young men.
