Wondering if anyone can locate an address in Otorohanga for
Len Jakich and his wife Maria
Family in Australia has an interest in finding house pic - fingers crossed
:-\

I can’t see them in Otorohanga Electoral Roll, only in directories which give his occupation as fishmonger, but there are no addresses.
Perhaps someone else will have more luck!

Her name may be spelt Marija
Marija Jakich 1963 Pakuranga Auckland

Hello.
Through the period you speak of, there are a number of adverts that were placed in the New Zealand Herald by Len seeking help in a fish shop / restaurant. I spotted March 1938 and again May 1941. So there will still be old Otorohanga residents who remember them.
Alan.
PS There are also birth notices in the NZ Herald and files at NZ Archives Wellington, but I'm assuming you have already checked them out.

Hi Gaye
No street number given on electoral rolls, but they are in Otorohanga from 1938 (a year after their marriage).
1938 - Waikato - Waitomo Electoral roll
JAKICH - Ljubomir - Maniapoto Street - restaurant proprietor / Mary -- married
1946 - same roll
JAKICH - Ljubomir - restaurant prop. and Mary - married - at Te Kanawa Street, Otorohanga
1949 - same roll and address
also 1949 - on Auckland - Otahuhu Supplementary No. 2 roll (suggesting that they had just moved to that locality).
She is now listed as "Marija" -- Ljubomir JAKICH, storekeeper] ... both residing at 1 Beach Road, Eastern Beach :

If you are interested in researching the history thereof, there are a number of interesting clips.
Apparently the probable [assuming only one fish shop / restaurant] owner of 1938 was prosecuted for running a large bookmaking/betting business from the back room. Not long after an advert appeared for the lease of the restaurant.
Alan
EDIT Please read late 1936 as per Lu's sharp eye for detail

Hi again Gaye
You might also like to try an email enquiry to Otorohanga District Council ... who may be able to help with an actual address for Len and Mary JAKICH for the timeframe you require. ;)
https://www.otodc.govt.nz/
[There is a link on that site also to the local library who could possibly have additional info. ]

.... are you able to provide the article regarding this prosecution ? Did it actually occur in 1938 ?
I mention it because there was a prosecution > very similar to the one you have described > which occurred in late 1936.

Thankyou Alan ... I just really wanted to clarify though, for the researcher here, that the prosecution > (yes, the man's name is recorded in the article), > had nothing whatsoever to do with Mr JAKICH. ;)

Hi again.
Not in a position to supply you with a pix of "the house" however it appears that the first aerial survey of the area was undertaken on 23-3-1944 and one photo in the set captures the township of Otorohanga.
See the Retrolens website. Agree on viewing terms. Select Otorohanga in search, then zoom right into the red Otorohanga dot. Then a side bar will appear of the range of photos available. Clicking on them will shade the big display with the area that photo captures.

In the first photo the railway runs across the photo from middle left to the bottom right corner. The main street follows the railway line.
