Title: POPE Baptism
Post by: wcooke on Tuesday 15 January 19 00:01 GMT (UK)
Looking for the marriage of William POPE and Martha MILLS in 1841, and the baptism of their first child in 1841 or 1842. At the time of the 1841 Census William was living in Penshurst. Martha was a servant in his household. Marriage took place in Q4 1841 in the Sevenoaks Registration District. A child was born to them before they emigrated to Canada in April 1842. Did not find any POPE births recorded in the Severoaks RD in 1841 and 1842, however, the child may still have been baptised at Penshurst. Other possibilities include Lenham where Martha was born or Maidstone where William was born.

Hi wcooke, :)
There is a Baptism of William Pope on 7th March 1842 .Son of William and Martha Pope.at St Mary's Parish Church .LENHAM. Kent.
Only 25 or so miles from Sevenoaks and a feasible distance to move for a job change.
                                                     Roger.

Lenham was where Martha was born so it's not a surprise that her son was baptised there. It appears that Martha was pregnant when she married William. William POPE was the son of a wealthy landowner and I doubt that his parents were pleased with there son having married "below one's station." Likely why William, Martha and infant emigrated to Canada in April 1842.
