Title: richards of Reading
Post by: emsworth on Tuesday 15 January 19 15:06 GMT (UK)
My great and great grandfathers both married related Richards girls from Reading in the 18th and 19th centuries. They seem to be related to woolen drapers Swithen and Richard Richards. Any information would be welcome. My family name is Holloway

You really need to be more specific as to what you need, to save us spending our time looking for what you already have.

Thanks for rapid response

Dear Rosie9

Thanks for yours

Mainly from Ancestry: I have marriage of John Shotter Holloway to Elisabeth Richards in 1793 at St Mary's in Reading
Marriage of his son Charles Holloway to Elisabeth's niece in 1845 at same church.
Birth of Elisabeth in 1793? to Richard and Mary Richards (woolen draper)
who had a shop on Sun Lane in Reading.
Earlier references to Swithen Richards
There are several Richard Richards in Reading whom I want to sort out and also trace the origin of Swithen Richards.

I hoped someone might have family tree!

Please excuse the notes but at 94 it is a bit daunting.

Yours

Stephen Holloway

Hi Stephen,

Don't be daunted, you'll not be intimidated on this forum, it's the reason I've been a member for many years now, we all try to help when we can.  I find it a nice break from my ancestry research to look at problems other people have and help where I can - I've learnt a lot too doing that and seeing other's more experienced advice.

Do you have John Shotter Holloway's siblings, their children and all his children?

Also do you have John's parents/ancestors?

This info will give us something to work from and save repetition of your efforts.   :)

Finally, are their any births/marriages/burials that you have that you would like confirming?

I was brought up near Reading and have a number of books about the town so I'll have a look and see if there's any mention the people you're interested in.

I do have a Holloway/Halloway ancestor from the 1700s but she was born at Goring, some miles west along the Thames from Reading, in 1723/4 and 'married into' my surname family by special licence in 1742 at Caversham just over the Thames from Reading.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to trace her ancestry further back than her father, there are too many of his name in the area to make any decision.

Just had a look at St Mary Parish Register transcription marriages:

3 Jun 1845

Charles HOLLOWAY, full age, wid, Clergyman, Stanford Dingley - father named as John S. gentleman
Charlotte RICHARDS, full age, sp, Castle St - father Richard gentleman

witnesses: Jno RICHARDS, Jn;EDWD (sic), May; Emily TURNER (sic), Henry TURNER - Licence

Being a clergyman may help to track Charles

Thank you for the  added details re the Richards and the parish of my  great grandfather's baptism. most of the family seem to have used St Mary's. It all helps  to sort out the Richards Thanks again for taking the trouble to look the things up. Much appreciated

Stephen

Dear Artifis
Thanks you for your encouragement. I have managed to see the St Mary's baptisms but not the marriages and deaths. I will persevere. And also try St  Giles. Any background material would be welcome. I have full details of my Holloways going back to 1600  they stayed in Emsworth until John Shotter moved to Berkshire  so I am afraid we are not related.

The book I have to hand about Reading doesn't have any reference to the drapers you mentioned but I do have some other books stored away which I'll check when I get a bit of time, granddaughters visiting this weekend so will be sometime next week.

My apologies, I'd started to look at this family but have been in hospital for a minor op and completely forgot about the subject  >:(

Charlotte RICHARDS was born 6 Jul 1800 at Reading (in the St Laurence parish) and baptised 3 Aug 1800 at the Broad Street Meeting House (Independent) the daughter of Richard and Mary RICHARDS  - source Ancestry.

Update:
By 1871 Charlotte is a widow and visiting the BUCK family in Norfolk and appears to stay in the county as she is living there in 1881.

Death: Charlotte HOLLOWAY born 1800 died Dec qtr 1884 Aylsham Vol 4b Page 64

I've had a look at my various books on Reading and I can't find any reference to your drapers I'm afraid.

Thanks again.
The info is very helpful. I did not  know the Richards were non conformists. The Bucks in Norfolk are part of my family so this was interesting. I will try to locate the will. You seem to have access to a lot of sources!
