Title: George Nelson 1852-1919
Post by: cristeen on Tuesday 15 January 19 21:40 GMT (UK)
I have a birth/baptism record for this man from Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire which I think is now Dumfriesshire (not familiar with Scottish boundary changes!) I think his place of birth is Maryholm Cothouses? I found a Maryholm (farm) on the NW outskirts of Dumfries (Nithside) which may be the place.
Does any one have any alternative suggestions for either the place or it's location? Thanks in advance :)
Christine

Hi

http://www.kirkcudbright.co/terregles.asp

It is still in Kirkcudbrightshire for genealogical purposes but is in the Dumfries and Galloway Council area.

I read it as Maryholm , Cothouse.

Added - forgot to say it is NW of Dumfries

I see "Maryholm Cothouse" - no comma and no plural - so if Maryholm was a farm, I wonder if iit means that he was born in an attached farm cottage (or "cothouse") there.

Agree, no comma. I think I used the comma while I paused to check the image  :-X

Only place I can find on the old maps so far is Maryfield.

THere are quite a lot of mentions of Maryholm Burn on Google. It runs from the parish of Terregles through Maxwelltown on the west side of the Nith into the Nith.

Gadget, thank you for your time on this. The Maryholm you identified is the same that I found so I am reassured that I am on the right track with this. Thanks again

Christeen, I'd also like to thank you for, by accident while looking through the census addresses for Maryholm, I believe I've found a nephew of one of my ancestors. I need to investigate further but I'm pretty sure it is  :)
