Have you looked for him on the 1939 register or checked for a marriage/death on freebmd? His birth was registered in the March qtr 1896 but he may have been born at the latter end of 1895 and his birth registered after Christmas.
www.freebmd.org.uk
A William Anthony Watkins b 20.1.1896 died in December 1974 in Buckinghamshire. Use that birthdate when searching the 1939 register
Possible marriage in 1926 on freebmd in York. William A Watkins to Florence E Field
Possible death for Florence E Watkins 1957 Willesden Middlesex
Birth Florence Ethel Field June qtr 1886 Medway 2a 569

The 1926 marriage was at St Oswald. Fulford. York as per www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk
Buying a copy of the marriage cert will confirm if his father was John Thomas Watkins. Or - you could post a marriage lookup request on the Yorkshire board to see if anybody is able to look it up in parish records

He was baptised in Manchester (abode Collyhurst) on 9th February 1896 age 3 weeks which gives a better idea of his YOB
