I wonder if anyone could help with the birthplace of my great great grandfather please ? Samuel Leaning was born to Joseph Leaning and Charlotte Pine in 1829/1830 going by the censuses. However in three of these his birthplace is given as either Jamaica or Bermuda. In the rest it is either Barton or Barrow in Lincolnshire. It appears that he was the first child born to his parents, with a further four children, (Moses, Aaron, Job and Charlotte), being baptised in Barton between 1833 and 1843.
Joseph was a labourer in Lincolnshire, but I wonder whether he might have served in the army in the West Indies and married there, as I cannot find his marriage in the UK ? His occupation is given as soldier on the marriage record of one of his sons. I would be very grateful for any advice offered. Thank you.

I think that Charlotte was probably married before she married Joseph

Wow, thank you Rosie99, that's something I hadn't considered. It certainly fits as Charlotte was born in Nottingham and would have been of marriageable age in 1817. That raises the question of who Samuel's father was and whether the foreign birthplace was genuine, or a cover story for an illegitimate birth. You've given me lots to look into, thanks again.

John & Charlotte possibly have the following children baptised St Mary, Nottingham
Mary Ann 12 Nov 1817 (abode Wool Alley) Fathers occ 95th Regt Foot
Presay 12 Mar 1820 (abode Wool Alley) fathers occ FWK (framework knitter)
Mary Ann 21 Jul 1822 (abode Dean Street) fathers occ F W K -
burial for Mary Ann 12 Aug 1823 -abode Dean Street
I can't see a death for John though

I'll follow up on these children and see if I can find out more. Before 1837 and the censuses confirming parentage is less easy. I'm just glad some of Charlotte's children with Joseph were born after 1837, so I could discover her maiden name. Can I ask what source you're using please ? Ancestry and Freereg aren't being very helpful.

Hi, I did wonder whether it was a mistranscribed Percy, although Percy Mercer doesn't have much of a ring to it ! A woman's name makes more sense, perhaps similar to Priscilla. Another lead to follow, thank you.

Nottingham mariages were on familysearch. FindMyPast has Nottinghamshire indexes/transcriptions and Lincs to the past has some Barton images
-
Thank you Tazzie. More information i'm sure I wouldn't have found by myself. I'm very grateful.
Rosie, thanks again. I haven't used Lincs to the Past before but will certainly check it out now. What a shame I have to go to work today with all these leads to follow :)

Is Joseph LEANING a bachelor at marriage to Charlotte PINE?.
Joseph, with sons Samuel, Moses, Aaron and Job, and marrying at very adult age, you might expect to see him give his own name to a son.
Maybe he already has a son Joseph LEANING?
-
That would make a lot of sense, particularly as it appears that Joseph and Charlotte weren't married until 1832. Perhaps Samuel himself was from Joseph's first marriage. Thank you.

A Joseph leaning is listed on the army muster and pay list 1812-1817.
22nd regiment of foot 25th Dec 1812- 24th March 1813. Isle of Bourbon.
25th Sept 1815 - 24 Sept 1815 Mauritius. On service to Bengal

I came across that information but there was nothing to identify the age or place of birth of that particular Joseph Leaning, so I haven't added it to my Joseph's record. Had I found him serving in the West Indies at the time of Samuel's birth though, it would have been too much of a coincidence to ignore. Thank you for passing it on.
-
It may be worth posting on the army boards in case someone can help to find location of the 22 regt of foot around the time Joseph was born
-
Good idea, thank you.

I see that MaxD has been really helpful (as usual) with information on the military records placing Joseph in 1830 ;D
I wonder if the marriage between Joseph and Charlotte indicates whether they were both widowed. Sorry I only have access to transcripts.
-
Yes, MaxD's help has been brilliant, confirming that the Joseph in the earlier military records is highly likely to be my Joseph, because of that regiment's service in Jamaica at the time of Samuel's birth. That does suggest that Samuel's mother is not Charlotte, but that Joseph married her on his return home and began a new family with her. I wonder whether Joseph's first marriage might even have taken place in Jamaica or at an earlier posting and not in his home county at all ?

I wonder if this is John Mer* burial.
John Merley
Age 28
Residence Red Lion Street
Burial 23 Sep 1825
St Mary, Nottingham

It would certainly fit, being the same parish he married in and in which his possible children were baptised, and prior to Charlotte's remarriage. An easy mistranscription from Mersey too.
What a sad marriage for Charlotte if so, with both Mary Anns presumably dead and then her husband.
