I am researching my grandmother's Caunter family from Devon. My mother told me she contested the estate of a very wealthy "General Caunter" possibly in the 1930s or 1940s(?) who had no will. Another woman also contested and was successful. My grandmother (Lily Beatrice Caunter 1896 -1976)did not succeed because of an illegitimate birth. I would love to know more about this and would welcome any help establishing who this "General Caunter" was.

Possibly
John Eales Caunter C B
Rank Honorary Brigadier General
According to The Times October 30, 1937 James Eales Caunter died possibly his son
He died October 1937 - son of J E Caunter of Ashburton in Devon
ADDED He was married to Kate and had 2 daughters
-
James Caunter left a will
John E Caunter died in 1913, I can't see a will for him yet
-
James was 78 when he died so born c 1859. Was Lily Beatrice allegedly his illegitimate daughter?

James Eales CAUNTER was baptised in India 3 January 1859
son of John Eales and Elizabeth Fanny CAUNTER. John a Lieutenant in the Bengal Army
in 1860 John died and in 1861 Elizabeth Fanny, (an East India Company Widow) James Eales and another son John Henry are back in Devon.
Elizabeth Fanny CAUNTER died in Plymouth in 1922
So the 1913 J.E. EALES death must be a different man.
-
1860 John Eales died intestate. Administration granted to Fanny Elizabeth.

I have both Caunters and Ealeses along my ancestors, but curiously on different sides -- Caunters through my grandfather, Ealeses through my grandmother. I hadn't previously been aware of a link between them, other than that they were both associated with Ashburton (where I was myself born, though that was just a wartime effect, when you had to be born where you could find a maternity ward, regardless of whether you had any connection with the place). Probably I should look more closely at the two families. My most recent Caunter is Priscilla (1760-1833), later Prout, later Cornish, my great-great-greatgrandmother. I can go seven generations before her, to George Caunter. However, the information comes from a handwritten tree, which may or may not be reliable.
My most recent Eales is Catherine (1809-1840), later Kitson, my great-greatgrandmother. In her case the data are more reliable, but only go back four Eales generations, to John Eales. Further in a different direction, to Richard Raban.
