Title: Henry/Harry Wilsey Lovejoy death
Post by: EdCan on Wednesday 23 January 19 22:44 GMT (UK)
Harry born abt 1854 NY married Helen Elizabeth Ingraham 16 Mar 1892 in Manhattan. I have Harry in 1900,1920 and 1930 census. In 1930 he is living with daughter and son-in-law William T Jenkins in Los Angeles and shown as widowed. Helen died in 1925. There is an indication that he may have died in 1938 as his name is on the USSS Applications and Claims Index.
My problem is that I can not find any record of date and place of death.

The closest I came from looking at familysearch is this man. I don't think it is him.

California Death Index, 1905-1939
Name:   Harry C Lovejoy
Event Type:   Death
Event Date:   1939
Event Place:   , , California, United States
Gender:   Male
Age:   85
Birth Year (Estimated):   1854
Certificate Number:   49905

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKS9-4H22

but the county index says he died in Nevada County, California, which, according to Google Maps, is even farther north than San Francisco.

a rootschat post from shellyesq from 8 years ago pointed me to the county codes, which are here:

A 1940 Orange Co., California voters' list has a Harry W. Lovejoy, carpenter (same occupation as 1930 census) at Sunset Beach, P.O. Box 97.

I don't know how quickly they cleaned up the list as far as removing the deceased in those days, but they seemed to release the list on even years.

Are you sure that William T. Jenkins is his son-in-law?  Looking at the image of the 1930 census, William appears to be listed as divorced.  On the bottom of an earlier page, there is a Daniel H. McCarthy, age 35 who was first married at age 34.  That fits with Harry's daughter also being first married a year earlier.  Daniel is at 716 N. La Jolla, and N. La Jolla seems to be the street listed next to Harry & his family.  A little bit of writing to the left of Daniel's entry seems to say Sheet 31 Line 1, which is the sheet where Harry and the rest are listed.

I think this is Daniel McCarthy & Edith in 1940 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K9HF-ZZ6  They were in Beaumont, Riverside Co., CA in 1935.

I think this might be Daniel in a soldier's home in 1933, and it gives an address for wife Edith in Glendale, California.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9PTZ-7NR2?i=95&cc=1916230

I agree that it is Daniel McCarthy. When I looked on Ancestry at the library it showed William T Jenkins. I did not pay attention to the family number. Thanks for correcting

Harry W. doesn't seem to be in the 1939 Los Angeles directory.  The Harry C. death seems to fit as far as the time frame, but between the middle initial, the different location, and the index listing his spouse's middle initial as M, I don't know.

His death is a puzzle. I have posted an inquiry on the Nevada Co message board for an obit. We shall see
Thanks for having a look
