Title: Glasgow burial grounds
Post by: snook on Thursday 24 January 19 00:36 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Where can you search for Glasgow burial grounds from 1750 to 1845.
I'm looking for Lair 132 Glasgow where 4 of my Gt Grandparents are buried.

John Murray Buried 18 March 1778,his wife Ann Buried December 1817

George Murray Buried 09 May 1820 his wife Margaret Buried 17 Jan 1845

All Buried Lair 132 Glasgow.

There are most likely be other Murrays buried as well.

Cheers Phillip

This is the list of current Glasgow burial grounds https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=17175      Many older ones willl not be on this list.  You can narrow the search if you know your relations' Religion, and place of residence.  I don't think there is one central site that you can search....

Where did you get the lair number from?

On basis they were buried in large cemetery. The cemetery likely to be of interest from dates is Glasgow Necropolis in my view. Southern Necropolis is also a possibility.

Main contact is Glasgow City Archives in Mitchell Library. Also there are burial records on Familysearch  go to Catalogue, type in Glasgow, Lanark - then find Cemeteries - should say 39. They have access to lair books and registers and interments - hopefully for dates mentioned.

The Necropolis was opened in 1832 & the Southern Necropolis post that date. Glasgow Cathedral is a possibility & the Ramshorn Kirk another. The latter was the Merchants burial ground & it's being full up was the cause of establishing the Necropolis!

I would agree with Skoosh - the problem is that Lair 132, Glasgow is lacking information.

At the earlier period the burial would most likely have been in a Kirk yard with the High Kirk (Glasgow Cathedral) a strong possibility.

The Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society have transcribed some of the lair records and also have compiled an index to the High Kirk Burial ground.

I couldn't see Margaret burial in Glasgow Necropolis for date given.

Yes I know that Skoosh. I was trying to rule out Margaret being buried separately.

Re where did the lair 132 come from,

Wheech research:  OPR Deaths Glasgow 644/1/65/71
1820: May: 9: George Murray: [Age] - : [Cause of Death] - : [Lair] 132: 1s. 6d.

In 1841 census a likely Mrs Margaret Murray, 75, an independent, resided at Campbell Street, Barony, Glasgow, with Jane Murray, 20, possibly a granddaughter, and Margaret Smith, 25, a female servant.  Margaret Murray nee Davidson, 76, died in January 1845 of old age and was buried in the same Lair No.132 on 17 January 1845.

OPR Deaths Glasgow 644/1/67/174
1845: January: 17: Mrs Margaret Davidson or Murray: [Age] 76: [Cause of Death] Aged: [Lair] 132: 2s.6d

Phillip, likely these would show no details on burials but just checking whether you have seen them. From Scotlands People:

George Murray
10/5/1821
wright in Glasgow, spouse of Margaret Murray Davidson
Trust Disposition and Settlement
Glasgow Sheriff Court Wills
SC36/51/1

John Murray
1/2/1780
wright in Glasgow
Testament Dative and Inventory
Glasgow Commissary Court
CC9/7/71

I mostly find that death notices in the Glasgow Herald are simply that with no detail on cemetery. Might be worth checking nevertheless... The Glasgow Herald is on google. You cannot search by key word on google but you have dates to work from.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC - simply add year for search to see what issues may be available (insert a year in 'Date' box).

Could this reference and legal debate regarding Widow Murray relict of George Murray, wright and glazier of Glasgow, relate to your Margaret Davidson Murray? From google books, link shrunk http://www.rootschat.com/links/01nap/

How much info do you have on the wider Murray family for John and George?

I ask because there are a number of Murrays buried at Ramshorn Cemetery www.happyhaggis.co.uk/lanark-ramshorn.htm

1442 The property of Archibald(?) Murray, wright(?) in Glasgow, Helen(?) Mar#### ###...###, E### Cr##### his spouse, died on the #th of March 18#2 aged forty two years. Sacred to the memory of Maurice Murray(?), late wright in Glasgow, who died on the 18th day of ### MDCCC##### aged seventy-seven years. John Murray ###...### 1841 aged 38(?) years and 3(?) months also(?) sacred to the ###...### Archiband(?) Thomas(?) who died on the 1st(?) day of May(?) #### aged ## years.

I think this is the Maurice mentioned there. From Wills section on SP:

Maurice Murray
9/12/1817
wright in Glasgow
Inventory; Extract Disposition and Settlement
Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories
SC36/48/13

Unfortunately, I cannot find any online lair info for the cemetery on Family Search (as mentioned by Batfruit earlier). Their databases are easy enough to find if you follow Batfruit's notes earlier.

This family group is just a possibility really.

There may be no surving stone for your Murrays and therefore monumental inscriptions to help further. Lair books are certaintly the way forward as you are doing.

Thanks Monical,
The poor law ref was a great help.
At this stage i haven't found any Archibald Murrays linked to our tree.

John Murray & Ann Scott had 4 children
1  John m. Janet Hunter who we have researched.
2 Mary b.1762 we know nothing
3 James b.1765 we know nothing
4 George & Margaret Davidson who we have researched, but know nothing of there other 8 children, except George.

So the Ref to Margarets Daughters was great to get.

Many thanks to all that so far have replied.

Cheers Phillip
