My gg grandmother was Sarah PITTOCK b 1831 Walmer, Kent, who had my g grandfather Henry William PITTOCK out of wedlock in 1851 in Deal, Kent.
In 1853 Sarah married James JUDGE in Deal. James was in the Rifle Brigade and they went off to India where they had at least five children. He was apparently born in Ireland in c1830
I cannot find any trace of any of them in the UK after this, but through a contact from DNA on Ancestry I have been informed that James aged 46 with children Arthur age 20, Mary Jane age 18 and Elizabeth age 11 all arrived in New York on a ship called SPAIN on 23rd February 1881
There were two other children Charles Richard b 1861 and Frederick George b 1864. All the children were born in India. There could possibly be another called Alfred, but no other details known.
Is it possible that one of you wonderful people can find the whereabouts of Sarah and the other two children please.
Did they die in India or did they get back to the UK? Where did the ship SPAIN sail from to take the family to New York.
I understand that James became at least a Sgt in the Rifle Brigade and was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal with the Lucknow clasp in 1859.
Thank you for at least reading this.

Sandra,
What on earth can I say, totally in awe with all of this information. Thank you very, very, very much.
There is one little thing that is a bit worrying is that in my original message I did not put Sarah's middle name in which is Sarah Ann PITTOCK.
In your second message about Charles marrying Mary A, you have the parents names ass James and Sarah J.
I really am sorry if you have done all that for nothing. I will hang my head in shame.

Hi
I've just found a possible death in Roscommon, Westmeath for Sarah Ann(e), which might fit with James's army service:
1873 Sarah Anne Judge, aged 41, Athlone, Q2, Vol 8, page 1
The full cert is not showing on the Irish genealogy site but here's a link to the entry
https://tinyurl.com/ycjexxwk
You might have to go through the captcha test to see it!
Gadget
Add - it's also on FindMyPast, Irish records.

There seems to be some refs to the Brigade being in Ireland circa 1873:

and a few pages before after.

Hi Gadget,
Thank you very much for that. Between you, you have given me lots to have a look at and digest.
I am a member of Find my past, but when I have tried entering Sarah's details, I do not get that back Hmmmm.
Appreciated very much.

Sandra did all the family work :)
I just saw that you'd corrected her name to Sarah Ann, so did a search on that with her birth year +/- and searched World records for a death 1876 +/- 5.
I was expecting a death in India, if anywhere, but the Irish one came up and that clicked with some of my family's service records. I then checked the Irish site.

Hi Tom,
Thank you for your kind comments - team work plays a part in all these good threads.
Regarding the middle initial for Sarah, you can take that with a pinch of salt - mistakes happen, mis-transcriptions, informant info - I think in general it still all pointed to your family.
Delighted that Gadget pinpointed a death record for Sarah, I fully expected it to be India and not Ireland ;)
Hope you enjoy putting all the family info together.
Regards

Totally agree. I checked for a birth/baptism for Charles Richard and found a baptism for him in Agra, Bengal, 18 Sept 1861. Parents James and Sarah Ann. Father listed as Sergeant, Commissariat Dept.
This date fits well with his date/place of birth on the link that Sandra gave*.

Thank you very much
