Title: Help to decipher name please
Post by: Cell on Tuesday 29 January 19 01:48 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Could anyone please help with this person's name. I think the initial maybe a J, but I  haven't got a clue what the surname reads. ( it looks as if it ends with an el as the e looks like the one in November) The beginning of the name looks like either a H to me or a G, it's driving me nuts. The more I look at it - the more I haven't a clue.

The only writing to compare it to is the date below
Thanks for any help

Hi Cell,

Can you give some more details please as to the origin of the doc. e.g. where/when/what?

It looks a bit like J Gleason but... the detached letters don't seem to be part of the surname although looking at 'November' they should be  :-\

Is it J Pleasance/Pleasunce.
or Pleasence like the actor Donald Pleasence (the Great Escape)

That is certainly closer to what I am seeing, before seeing others answers.

As Annie says, some context would be good.

Hi

It's from an old book that I  am reading ( The Pageant of the century, Odhams Press LTD)

I am very curious about the name because the last entry in print in the book is August 1933 - and yet the signature in the book of the original owner is dated Nov 1933-  That seems amazing to me that from writing the last entry, to going to print, to getting bound hardcover and then sold in a shop has only taken around 3 months.
I am wondering if he was a journalist for the press( odhams) .

There is no published date in the book, and most online old bookshops have put the published date of 1934 because the book is about the years 1900 to 1933.( but it stops in August of that year)

I am really curious :)
Thank you for the help
Kind regards

Just a guess but is it possible the signature was done just prior to being printed (that page) as it may have been noticed it hadn't been signed?

Or...may have been the 1st copy, gifted to someone (by the author), straight after print?

The book has no Author, or Authors, so I don't know who wrote it.
Odham press employed journalists.

There is only a foreword by H. V Moreton ( who used to work for them before he became a famous published travel writer)

It's just I find it very curious the date of the signature ( on front flyleaf) is so soon after the last printed entry in the book. It seems very quick to print, to the point of sale, unless it was a gift to someone who worked there at the press, or a gift to someone from a worker at the press.

It also seemed odd to me as there is a lack of Dear, To or from  - so I was leaning on the side that it wasn't a gift to him ,and J pleasence either bought it himself ( or herself) , which seems really fast publishing to sale,  or he worked at the press, hence why the narrow time frame of dates, which would make more sence to me.
( I over think things sometimes lol)

Thank you all for deciphering the name, it was looking like googly gook to me .
Kind regards :)

Just saw this and thought immediately that it is  "J Pleasence".
