Title: Nigeria in 1957 and 1960 - did my ancestor emigrate?
Post by: mhoc12rchat on Friday 01 February 19 17:20 GMT (UK)
I've just found a cousin who went to work in Nigeria in 1957 on the Apapa May 30th 1957 from Liverpool - he was a motor mechanic - I can though find a return trip so I dont know how long this trip was for. Or even the company he worked for - assume he applied via newspaper advert?

Then again in 1960 March 31st  he went out as an Inspector of works  from Liverpool to Laos on the Aureol but this time he went with his wife - again I dont know if this was an extended work trip and they came back - cant see a return trip.
What works might he have been inspecting?
How do I find the shipping manifestos?
Or if  this was a short works contract or if they went out there to live and eventually died out there.

Also no address from which they set off from.

Winston Bann born 1st November 1911 and Irene Bann 25th June 1913

So they were not in the first flush of youth to be doing such a long sea journey or even emigrating to another country leaving behind their son Winston Leroy

The address on that passenger list is occupied by the son and his wife.
In 1978 parents and son and daughter in law are all Manurewa at two different addresses.

1881 all 4 have moved to Kerikeri.  There is also a son, I presume a grandson of Winston and Irene.

Huge thanks for this - so I wonder where they are between 1960 and 1971 - out in Nigeria maybe or maybe they went back to the UK.

I've looked on wikipedia and it says the SS Southern Cross went from Southampton to Auckland in 76 days going out of Southampton but from summer 1971 it was just doing med cruises so this must have been earlier in 1971

This address in Auckland must be where the son Winston Leroy has gone to live.

So it does look like the parents Irene and Winston emigrated out there in 1971 to be close to the son and his wife and son

Are they at 2 different address in Kerikeri?

On the map its looks quite a big relocation from Manurewa

Excellent so Winston Leroy is a farmer which fits in as their hometown is still fairly rural. And they set off from Southampton on the 70 odd hour trip with a 2 year old which must have been fun.

At some point then Winston senior and Irene must have gone back to the UK from Nigeria - before 1971 - there seems to be manifestos going out but not the return trips for these 2 ...

I am also thinking that the son - Winston Leroy and his wife Kathleen and son must also have been on a shopping manifesto sometime between 1963 and 1970

Also Winston and Irene must have been on a manifesto going back to the UK before 1971 ...

See previous post :)

Added.  Ancestry seems to have gone down in this neck of the woods.

So Winston Leroy is a diary farmer

1960 and he is 25 and he is going from Sydney to Sydney via Auckland so there must be a previous shipping manifesto starting from Southampton

He gets married late 1962 in Warwick so after this trip he must go back to England - either via Sydney or via Auckland so there must be another shipping manifesto. Then he meets his wife, gets married, has a son and goes back out to New Zealand.

There was a similar assisted passage scheme for migrants to New Zealand up until 1971, similar to the one Australia had - maybe that is how him and his family went out to New Zealand in 1962 and then Winston senior and Irene later on ...

If he was an assisted immigrant I would have thought it was the 1957 trip.  Where he is a Farm Worker

Hi there, I am the great grand-daughter of both Tony and Irene Bann. They moved to New Zealand after my grandfather (their son) Win  and my grandmother moved here with my Dad. They also had a daughter once they arrived here.
