Title: George E Greenwood Born Luton 1921 -Where, When Did He Die?
Post by: Handson on Sunday 03 February 19 09:49 GMT (UK)
George E. Greenwood was born in Luton in 1921 the son of Herbert Arthur Barnet Greenwood (b. 23 July 1888) & Ellen Greenwood (nee Hunt) who married in September 1909.

George E. Greenwood married Joan M. Moon in Thanet in December 1939.

George's mother is down as Hunt on his birth certificate which fits with his parents.

George & Joan had two children (*)

The peripatetic pair had the son in Lichfield and the daughter in Battersea.

George E and Joan M Greenwood were living in Cheam according to electoral rolls of the 1960s and 1970s.

It is thought that George E Greenwood died aged about 62 in around 1983 but try as I might I cannot find any trace of his death. Help!

If you have got his birth certificate surely you know his middle name beyond initial E?

His actual birth date would also help.

'It is thought that George E Greenwood died aged about 62 in around 1983'

have you got any evidence for this, or could he still be alive as he would be less than 100?

Q1 O.K. should have said birth details as per Freebmd.
Q2 I only know his birth was Q4 Dec 1921
Q3 George E Greenwood was the Editor of the fitness magazine 'Health & Strength' for some time in the 1970s and aquaintances of his have said he died around 1983 from a heart attack.

Have you looked for him in the 1939 Register?  If he died in this country before the 1990s then his entry should be unredacted.  If so it would give you his exact birthdate.

His children are of an age to be alive - if they are living their details shouldn’t be published on the thread.

Facebook for the magazine -

Perhaps you could post details of your question on there but omit any living persons.

Looking at FreeBMD George and Joan had one boy and two girls. These girls can be found living with their parents in 1970, Cheam.

Re the 1939 Register there seems to be only one George E(ric) Greenwood & he died in Keighley aged 85.

I have been told that 'my' George E Greenwood served in the RAF in WWII (& maybe was based at RAF Lichfield where son Anthony was born). Would this possibly explain why he isn't onthe 1939 Register?

Did he also edit Natural Bodybuilder in the early 80's?  :-\

This from a listing online, which also says that there is an article in Bob Kennedy's Muscle Mag International, January 1984, entitled "George Greenwood Remembered"

May I suggest that you obtain George's birth certificate?  This will give you his date of birth and also what the E stands for.

Births Dec 1921
Greenwood    George E    Hunt    Luton    3b   609

You can order this from the GRO.

I managed to find a contact who had that magazine.
The penultimate para apparently says:

'GEORGE GREENWOOD died suddenly on Saturday 9th July 1983 of a seizure. A tragic loss to his family and friends, leaving behind a loving wife, son Tony and daughter Hilary.'

There was no mention of any other forename than George.

It's strange that the death isn't on FreeBMD as it before the cutoff date for deaths on that Site.

Does this exact date of death help in finding out what his second forename was without resorting to his birth certificate?

Where is he supposed to have died?  Could there have been some reason which delayed registering the death?

I'll try to find that out for certain but it's almost certainly in the Greater London area -Sutton & Cheam possibly -see that comments about the electoral rolls of the 1960s &1970s.

Could it be this one and not the one born 1921  :-\

Deaths Sep qtr 1983
GREENWOOD    GEORGE ERNEST
Date of birth 5 Aug 1917
CANTERBURY reg district    16   148

Bear in mind that if he died suddenly of a seizure he could have been anywhere in the country.  Deaths are registered where people die not where they are normally resident

Probably the birth for that one - The marriage to Joan took place in Thanet RD
Births Sep 1917
Greenwood    George E    mmn Hales
Thanet    2a   1527

Good call Rosie, I think his daughter married in Canterbury.
I did get an impression that George's involvement in the world of bodybuilding might stretch back so far that he could have been older than was suggested.

Have we all been following the wrong trail if the George that the OP is after was born 1921 Luton   :-\

Handson - May I suggest that you get two certificates?

George's birth certificate ref. details as shown below:-

Births Dec 1921
Greenwood    George E    Hunt    Luton    3b   609

George's marriage certificate ref. details as shown below:-

Marriages Dec 1939
Greenwood    George E    Moon    Thanet    2a   5392
Moon    Joan M    Greenwood    Thanet    2a   5392

You can then check whether the E name is the same on both certificates and also the father's name.

He must have married young!  Just 18!  If this is the right one  ::)

The birth and marriage Georges could be two different people.   ::)

I have just come to the exact same conclusion myself i.e. that the George E. Greenwood married to Joan M. Moon in 1939 was the George Ernest Greenwood born 5/8/1917 (mmn Hales) in Thanet, died Sept.qtr.1983 Canterbury.  The burial details would seem to confirm it.

On the 1939 register Herbert and Ellen show with two closed records.  That would imply that George is still alive or that FindMyPast have not yet got round to opening it.

If George is still alive he will be in his nineties.

I think that the burial data are a clincher.

Good work everyone.

Strange that the Thanet George doesn't seem to be on the 1939 Register either-yet we know he has passed on.

If as you mentioned he was in the RAF he probably would not be on the 1939 register as it was for Civilians only

Ah, good shout.

I didn't know that. But it's corroborative info in a way.

The purpose of the register was to issue ration cards to civilians. It was used after the war up until the  1990's by the NHS, that is why you get amendments to womens surnames on it if they married after 1939.

Thanks for that too.
I was wondering about the crossings out with dates beyond 1939 even though I inferred it was due to marriage.

p.s. maybe that could be a reason why the 'other' George E. Greenwood (b. Luton) isn't on either.

This looks like the parents marriage for the 1917 George

Marriages Mar 1917

Greenwood    George    Hales    Thanet    2a   1772
Hales    Ida F    Greenwood    Thanet    2a   1772

The register was taken on 29 September 1939.

If he was born December qtr 1921 he was probably still at home, he was only just turned 18 at the start of war.  As already mentioned there are 2 blacked out entries after the parents

The register was also used for conscription sodoubtful that he would have joined up already
