Hello,
I hope someone can help me.
I am trying to create a thumbnail sketch of this gentleman's army career, from enlistment to pensioner listing (just the barest facts). I have tried both FindMyPast and Ancestry, but the detail is neither cohesive nor comprehensive (could be my poor research technique, of course ::)). The 1871 Census shows he was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Service Corps stationed in Aldershot and in 1901 he is a Retired Army Captain living in Lambeth.
Just to add a little spice to the picture.....he was sentenced to transportation for 7 years in July 1851 for uttering a forged order for money but was released early in May 1855 on a Ticket-of-Leave. "The boy did good" as they used to say ::)
For the moment I look forward to any details.
Thank you,

Hi,
If you have access to newspapers on FindMyPast there is an article on MPW listing his Service career -
Army and Navy Gazette 21 March 1908
He died 13 March 1908 (recorded as hon. rank of Major).

Thank you JJ,
That is a very helpful "Obituary".............it is the "after serving in the ranks close on 20 years" aspect I am also trying to detail, enlistment date, theatres served in, promotions etc.
