Found this entry relating to my ancestor ..he was farming but also apparently had other jobs...
"Lately, at Podmore, near Eccleshall, Mr Joseph Steele, aged 79. He was head-borough & surveyor of roads of Podmore, & assessor & collector of taxes for 30 years."
Any info on these jobs or any ideas where I can find out more about them..would be appreciated

The Headborough was basically the parish officer and a sort of policeman. Joseph was obviously a village "worthy".

The free ebook "The parish officer: Comprising the whole of the present law relating to the several parish and union-officers, as well as of the guardians of the poor in England" gives a full description of the duties of these jobs. You can search for the various terms, such as Headborough, assessor and highways.
This is the 1858 edition, there are earlier ones.

Surveyor of the Highways was an unpaid parish officer established by the Highways Act 1555. In 1691 the law was altered so that the inhabitants gave the Justices of the Peace a list of landowners eligible for selection. The officer was obliged to survey the highways three times a year and organise the labour to repair the roads.
