Title: Residents search
Post by: xs on Wednesday 06 February 19 21:33 GMT (UK)
Am trying to find the aunt and uncle of Carlota Da Conceicao 1918-2005  She came from Portugal to live in England when she was 12 after her mother had died.  Ship arrived in Southampton 15th August 1930  The proposed address was 38 Oxford Tce (I'm assuming this is Terrace?) London.W. - possibly Hammersmith, as this is where she spent a good deal of her years here. Thanks

Sorry, have reread this and should have made it clear that she came to live with her Aunt and Uncle in England who, either or, or both came from Portugal

In 1939 she is living with a couple called Midwinter in Hammersmith.  It also shows her married name as Hunt.

Married in 1953

Henry T Midwinter appears on a travel schedule in 1927 and the address he gives is 38 Oxford Terrace, Hyde Park.

Maria Midwinter who appears with him on the 1939 register dies in 1944.

I cannot find any marriage for Henry to a Maria but he may have married her abroad.

There is a marriage for Henry in 1950, if this is the same one:-

Marriages Jun 1950

Midwinter    Henry T    Scott-Forbes    Hammersmith    5c   1511
Scott-forbes    Dorothy M    Midwinter    Hammersmith    5c   1511

So already married by 1927.  I am assuming that Henry married Maria in Portugal as there is no trace of one in the UK.

Thank you all for this valuable information.  It means a lot,  as Carlota was my partner's Great Aunt and we knew very little about her background in Portugal.  I only met her a few times quite late on in her life but she was a dear lady, a talented seamstress and had many amusing stories to tell!   It would be lovely if I could find out more about her and her family  Thank you again

Hi found quite a few more voyages for Henry T Midwinter one 17th July 1924 Liverpool to Lisbon on Vessel  Hildebrand.aged 40 address in UK 38, Oxford Terrace.

PS if anybody can locate the arrival in Lisbon for the voyage 17th July 1911 Liverpool to Manaus, Brazil on Vessel Lanfranc as it could assist in seeing if he was married, as a Mrs Midwinter with him?

PPS Henry T made one further voyage to Lisbon 1954 aged 70 on Vessel Hildebrand address in UK 34, Aldbourne Road W12 just down the road from the 1939 address.

There is an earlier voyage departing from Liverpool on 15 July 1909 to Lisbon for a Mr & Mrs Midwinter (no first names/initials, ages or occupations) on the vessel "Antony".  The transcription only lists Mr Midwinter but the original image shows Mr & Mrs Midwinter.

Thanks for more information re Midwinter's travel to and from England to Portugal  I'm still looking for the marriage between Henry Midwinter and Maria??  There is a record showing Henry Trevor and Maria arriving at Southampton, 26th April 1926.  This is the first time I've seen her name as Maria Da Luz Midwinter  I've read that it is the custom in Brazil to take the surname from the father and the mother  Where do I go from here?   ::)

There is another record of Maria Da Luz Midwinter arriving from Lisbon at Southampton on the Oriana on 25 Feb 1927.  Her age is given as 48 (b. abt. 1879), no occupation.  Proposed address in UK: Strand Palace Hotel, London.  No sign of Henry or any other obvious family members.

I appreciate all of these travel records aren't finding the marriage, but sometimes if we keep digging a clue will pop up  :)
