A long time ago (say 5 years), I read about a rather mathematical and counter intuitive way of viewing a family tree. It was very powerful - and was called something like a carpet or quilt.
And it was NOTHING like a normal way of viewing a tree.
I think somebody created a prototype plugin for the Gramps program to do it.
Can anybody help me remember what it was?
I've been throwing keywords at google for half an hour and coming up empty.

I use GRAMPS. It is called a quilt, and, while I like complex things, I have not yet got to grips with it. It isn't immediately intuitive. There have been so many additions to GRAMPS lately. I love it.

If I could come in. Does Gramps work on a Mac and can you import a Gedcom ?

According to a note at the bottom of the Gramps wiki page, this feature is based on GeneaQuilts, which says it is a free program for all platforms:

Just an update :- I managed to download the Mac version and import a FTM Gedcom file without any problems. So now I will have a play around with it.

Thanks to all. I can only apologise for not finding it myself. It seems obvious in hindsight.
