Title: Identifying My Grandfather, Samuel Sissons in Hull
Post by: linney2019 on Thursday 07 February 19 22:34 GMT (UK)
Ideas on where I could search please!!! I have spent so long trying to solve this puzzle, I would even consider paying a local Archivist if there is one in Hull - I am so desperate. My father, John Joseph Sissons, was born in Hull in 1915 but when he was coming up to nine, his mother, Mary Jane Olsen died at thirty-two. He was put in to Linneaus Street Children's Home by his Father, Samuel Sissons. Dad was killed when I was a little girl - too young to ask questions and he never talked about his childhood at all, nor his family. The only thing I knew for sure, was his birthday, so I got a copy of his Birth Certificate. That is how I found out the names of his Mother and Father, Mary Jane Olsen (formerly Thackray) and Samuel Sissons, both lived in Hull. I was then able to find his Mother,  Mary Jane's Death Certificate and the names of her family, she was born Mary Jane Thackray in Dublin.  The problem is that although Samuel Sissons is listed as his father, I have no details at all of Samuel's age and when I check in Hull, there is no trace of 8 Warneford Terrace - the house that was listed when he was born. Mary Jane was not married to Samuel Sissons but still married to her first husband - Charles William Olsen and I do not know what happened there, other than my Dad's birth was not registered until he was five months, where his brothers were registered straight away. Identifying Samuel is proving impossible - there seems to be numerous Samuel Sissons in Hull. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - Thanks linney 2019

Welcome linney

I see that your father spent time in Canada?

He arrived in Liverpool on 22 April 1934 from St John, New Brunswick as John J Sissons, 18.  He was a labourer.  Last permanent residence: Canada.

Intended address in the UK: 8 Warnford Terrace, Stanley St, Hull.

Had he been sent to Canada from the children’s home?

Mother’s death: Mary Jane Olsen aged 32, Jun qtr 1923 Hull.

She had married Charles William Olsen, Mar qtr 1910 Sculcoates.  He seems to have died in Sculcoates in Dec qtr 1931 aged 44.

What happened to John’s siblings, do you know?

Interesting that the Warnford Terrace address was still associated with the family in 1934.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat, I wonder if he was sent to Canada as one of the British Home Children as part of the Child Migration Scheme.

Parents: Samuel (a dock labourer) and Mary, of 8 Warnford Terrace, Stanley St.

By December 1921 Samuel Sissons of 8 Warnford Terrace was an impecunious newsvendor.  He “sobbed” in Hull Police Court when ordered by the magistrates to pay 7s 6d for the maintenance of the two children of Mary Jane Olsen.

Samuel had cohabited with Mary Jane for nine years - “ I respected her as my wife until ten days ago”.  There are references to a lawful wife and three children who had run away from him “about three years ago”. (It is not made clear what had become of his wife).

He said he would try to pay 2s 6d each for his two children with Mary Jane.

Hull Daily Mail, 28 December 1921.

I am hoping I am writing to everyone that has written e.g. Jools, avm etc. I am really struggling trying  to quickly find out how to reply - and I am so grateful to you all for your help. I did find out about Fegans because I found out that he had become a Fegans boy - yes sent to Fegans via Linneaus Street Children's home. Left in 1932 and returned in 1934. His brother, was James William, two years younger, but he did not go to Canada.

Thank you so much for all your help and anything else will be appreciated
