Title: Ancestry: George Smith - Wright Eldridge marriage. Lynn 1774
Post by: Drinks on Friday 08 February 19 17:03 GMT (UK)
Hello Expert Rooters,
I've traced my husband's mother's family back to a bunch of Smiths, based around Lynn (Kings, South etc). The furthest I have reached are George and Wright as per the title. Married in 1774, I expect both were born between 1745 and 1755. While I realise it's almost impossible to find out which George this is from the many George Smiths born in this period, I would have though an unusual first name like Wright should be traceable, but I cannot progress. It is not a transcription error on the marriage record, as she is named as Wright as mother on earch of the records for 4 little Wright Smiths born in the 1780s.
Details from Ancestry free: George Smith = Wright Eldridge
Banns 28/8/1774
Marriage 31/8/1774
Lynn, Norfolk
Children: George, James, Benjamin and Ann
If anyone can suggest births and parentage for either, I'd be very grateful.
Cheers

Very strange there is an earlier burial for Wright.....

Wright Smith wife of George Smith a mariner of Union Lane Lynn age 68 which would tie in with a birth around 1745/46.

There is another Wright Smith baptised 1756 in South Lynn All Saints to Richard & Susanna listed as a male.

Hmm, thanks Rosie and Tazz, you've set me a nice conundrum.
Perhaps Wright is not such an unusual first name - possibly even 'normal for Norfolk'!
I need to sit down with pen and paper and figure out which is the right Wright.
Rosie's first, ( and important) finding was that George was a widower at marriage, making me think that he would be older than her. If she was born 1745 (Tazzie's first suggestion), then she would already be 29 at marriage in 1774 and 42 when she had her last child Ann in 1787. Not impossible, but quite a 'mature mother' for that century.
At the other extreme, if she is the Wright born 1756 (Tazzie's latest post) then she would be a young(ish) bride at 18-19 when married in 1774. Do 18 year old girls marry widowers? She is also from different parish though still in Lynn.
Tazzie's second Wright who dies age 68 (wife of George the Mariner) does however fit in with Rosie's Wright born 45/46. I should check if Union Lane is in St Margarets parish. Where did you find this 'earlier burial' Tazzie? Date? Location?
Rosie's 3rd post, offers a Wright who died aged 60 in 1821 - suggesting a birthdate of 1761. I think we may have to rule this Wright out as a potential bride for George in 1774 - 13 year old brides are definitely not normal for Norfolk even then!
Plenty for me to ponder.
Thanks for sticking at this

Just checked, St Margarets and All saints churches are about 1/2 mile from each other. That doesn't help much.

Hi drinks.

Yes I think it is your Wright. The other death found I think is b 1756 and dies in 1821 the baptism for this states male but no clues on the burial.
