Hello,
I have been searching for years for records for my great grandmother, Sarah Carden.
She is thought to have immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. We think she was born in Mayo.
She was born abt 1844 but died in 1874. U.S. records are few and sometimes disagree. I have not located her on a ship roster.
She married Michael Cox in West Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA in 1863.
The marriage record shows her father's name as William Carden. her mother was Catherine.
It is a real "long shot" that anyone would know the family but worth a try!

her only son was named William. Her first daughter was Catherine. so those names may be correct.

The age variances are not uncommon, unfortunately!
Also can't see a possible on passenger list - but even if there were, the age discrepancy makes it difficult and an actual passenger list if those times has scant information - hard to find someone for sure unless there's a number of family members traveling together to match to.
Equally a long shot…..but can't discount the following - the 1881 Census connects them to Co. Mayo too:

Catholic Church record: Catharina CARDEN age 65, of 44 Rutter Street, Died 7 August.
The priest has not completed the section to state when and where she was buried.
The Ford Cemetery record shows same address and records she was buried 10 August 1882 , and also records her age as 57 (an 8 year discrepancy). Grave SV887, Ford Cemetery
DEATH/BURIAL:
Catholic Church record: Gulielmus CARDEN age 80, 1Ct 94 Rutter Street, Died 14 Dec, Buried 17 Dec 1882.
The Ford Cemetery record show same address and death/burial dates but records his age as 60 (a 20 year discrepancy). Grave SV954, Ford Cemetery

Catherine 1857
Because of the gap between the 2 eldest (and Irish born children) and the 3 youngest - it can't be certain that Catherine O'BRIEN is the mother of Ann & Sarah. She (Catherine) was a good deal younger than her husband, she might be a second wife.

Yes, you have the correct family in
the US census.
I also found that Toxteth Park, Lancashire info.
I thought that could be it.
The family members were born in Ireland but moved to England.
I believe I traced that Sarah but as I remember the records led me to think that she stayed England.
I am going to check it out again.
I am also searching for links on Ancestry.com and GEDmatch..
So far I have not made a connection.
Again thank you so much.
Ironically I have a few pictures of her.
My grandmother, her daughter, was her fifth child.
She was born about a year before her mother died.
Sarah is our family’s sad mystery!

Carden isn't a common name in Ireland, so I had a look at the civil registration to see where it is concentrated in Mayo
These are the registration districts for Mayo https://www.swilson.info/regdistmap.php clicking on each one will give you a map.
From 1845 (non catholic marriages only) and from 1864 for all BMDs up to 1916 births, Marriages 1941, deaths 1966.
The results in are

Clifden 0
Killala 121
Newport 0
Oughterard 0
Swinford 1
Westport 0
It looks like Ballina and Killana registration districts are the most likely areas to search.
That link isn't going straight to Mayo, just choose Mayo from the county list.
Notice that Ballina and Killana districts are next to each other.

Do you know what religion your Carden's were?
If RC you can see what records survive in the parishes within those two registration districts.
Bearing in mind the reg districts are much larger that the RC parishes so several parishes will be in each district.

There is a RC parish called Killala so if you put that in the search at the top it will bring you to the correct general area of Mayo.

Please forgive me while I learn to use this format correctly.
I would prefer to respond to each of you who are so helpful and generous with your time individually.
Some years back I saw the Cardens who were Roman Catholics
in Doonfeeny Ballycastle.
Sarah and Michael were married in the Catholic Church.
The Catholic tradition has been strong in the family.
I think my problem was finding a William and a Catherine together.
Plus records except for the Tithing can be difficult to find before the Griffith Record of the 1850s
I thought that Ballycastle might be the area.
It may not be possible to really pinpoint the family, many years have passed.
My best route may be as I have been doing tracing any Carden leads through Ancestry and GEDmatch.
I thought I would post in case by a huge piece of luck anyone had a Carden family connection.
Most Cardens seem to go to the Pennsylvania area of the United States but she came to Massachusetts.
