Hi
I am interested in finding the names of soldiers who enlisted in World War I from Hamilton. My great grandfather was one and he was a POW. I am interested in discovering how many later migrated to Australia, particularly South Australia.
Any ideas on finding this information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
The barracks in Hamilton was that of the Cameronians / Scottish Rifles.
My grandfather and his brother both joined up there.
The rest of your request might be more difficult.
Maybe you could show the names of those you are interested in.

LFHS has recently published a book on soldiers with a Hamilton connection who died in WW1

Thank you Andrew and Sancti
I will follow up both your suggestions.

Local newspapers published lists of men from their town who enlisted, especially in the early part of the war. They usually also continued to publish details of local men who were wounded or decorated. I think that the Hamilton local paper was the "Hamilton Advertiser" which may be covered by the online British Newspaper archive or the newspapers on the Find My Past website. Both of those are pay sites, but local libraries often have subscriptions.
Another route is to search the military records on both Ancestry and Find My Past using just the keyword "Hamilton" - there will be a lot to go through, but you will find the records that survive of men who enlisted at Hamilton.
