Title: SATCHWELL Court 1813
Post by: warncoort on Sunday 10 February 19 05:00 GMT (UK)
Folks,
Charles Satchwell b 1795? is said to be a DNA match to my wife and i am trying to prove or disprove this.
From Australian Convict Registers Charles was convicted at Northampton Assizes on 26 July 1813 to seven years and transported aboard "Indefatigable" in 1814.I am obviously doing something wrong with TNA search using "Northampton Assizes" which fails to find any mention of him,am hoping someone with experience with TNA can turn up a result there or possibly a newspaper report. The Satchwell family i have traced are from Devon however this doesn't rule Charles out.
Regards,
Eric

Hi
Mention of him in Stamford Mercury 30 July 1813
At Northampton Assizes..
"C Satchwell aged 20, John Wood aged 20 and Richard Wilson aged 23 were found guilty of stealing from a boat lying at Braunston on 12th of May, five pieces of calico, property of Messrs. T & M Pickford and Co. Sentenced to 7 years transportation."
Another smaller report gives the value of goods stolen as 40s.
Available here page 3 but you have to subscribe I think, also available Findmypast

Cathy,
That will be him,Wilson is also on the convict register!
Now to confirm his birth locally to seperate him from the Devon line.
Many thanks,
Eric

Folks,
I had seen the 1791 baptism prior to this post but had nothing to connect him to a crime.I am satisfied that he is not a DNA match in the short term and will remove him from my tree.
Thank you all for your assistance.
Eric

Charles is the brother of my ancestor Mary Satchwell of Hellidon.

Do you know what became of him please?

Happy to help.
I was contacted by an Ancestry user who had Charles in her private tree but with DNA link to Devon Satchwell's and this was the reason for my post.I have since deleted Charles but still have access to the private tree.Sources are a little thin on the tree and i have done very little research on Charles in Australia. This page should help.

Hi all,  I realise that it may be a bit late but this is my first attempt at using this site.  Sorry.

I am a descendant of Charles Satchwell (convict to Australia) and have information on him after his arrival out here but virtually nothing prior to his trial.  However, the records of death for 'Charles Satchwell' indicates 1888, at Kempsey, NSW, with his parents listed as Ralph and Bessie.   Maybe this will help.

It is never too late to join in!
As mentioned i have removed Charles from my tree as i was unable to connect him to the family from Devon, but the good people here may be able to assist.
Happy hunting.
