In 1857 an Elias Bowditch received parish relief in Netherbury Dorset for
Illness of a child - Strumous
Can anyone tell me the meaning of Strumous please ???
Sadly the child can be found in various institutions after her mother died in 1864 and her life ended in Dorset County Asylum in 1918.

What did the mother die of, it could give the answer.

The death certificate (1880) of the one year old son of my great grandma (Elizabeth Crossley) says that he died of "Struma Meningitis",which I was told was a form of tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes, especially of the neck. It was very common in children, and could be spread by unpasteurised milk from infected cows.

Was it common for parish relief to be given for a sick child?
I am now wondering what it have been possible for a child to survive such an illness in 1857. I will check the gro to see if they had another child born / died in between the census.
