Title: The Watkin family
Post by: Helina on Monday 11 February 19 09:38 GMT (UK)
Henry Watkins b 1857 Almondsbury, parents George and Clara Watkins.  On the 1881 census Henry has joined the police force lodging at the Police station in Bristol.  Between 1881 to 1883 it looks like he married to someone called Lucy.  Cannot find a marriage so may live together?  On the 1891 census Lucy was born in 1863 Binstead, Hampshire.  Henry is still a policeman living in Binstead. They now have 3 children but having difficulty in finding their birth reg on the gro sight which would give the mother's surname.
This is the information I have found on a......y

Annie born on the 9th March 1883 in Addiscombe , entered Goodrich Road School on the 5th February 1894;

Henry Herbert born 1885 East Dulwich, London. Baptised on the 5th May 1895 Camberwell St Giles, Southwark under the name Herbert Henry

Elizabeth Ellen born 1887 East Dulwich, London, Baptised same day and place as brother Henry/Herbert.

Any help would be appreciated.

Still no marriage but this might help.

”Annie born on the 9th March 1883 in Addiscombe”

I note that Annie was baptised Amelia Annie at the same time as Henry & Elizabeth, their father is now a Police Sergeant.

1891 – 15 Sturdy Rd. Peckham
Henry, Lucy, Annie, Herbert & Elizabeth = Ann Faithful 36 Sister in law, widow & her son Edward 11, Ann born Alton, Hampshire & Edward Wallington, Surrey

Henry Edward Faithful Baptism 13 Jul 1879 Wallington, Holy Trinity, Surrey. Father Samuel a Groom.

Samuel Faithful married Ann Leming 1877 Alton, Hampshire

1861 – The Straits, Binstead (All born in the County).
George 34 Ag Lab, Martha 27, Ann 6 born Wouldham, Edward, 4, Henry 6 months

Lucy Lemming Baptism1 Mar 1863 Binsted Near Alton, Hampshire, Parents George & Martha

In 1871, noted as Liming, George 12, Henry 10, James 7, & Eliza 8.
(I think this is Lucy, the names in this family seem to vary)

They are all inmates in Swanthorpe. Ann may be a servant in Alton.

Modified: Note Harry's father given as Henry, not George.

Have been going though your finds and with the 3 baptisms confirms the children etc, also now have the birth reg for Amelia and Henry on Gov Records giving the mother's surname as Leming, the only doubt I have is the marriage given by Margaret, Henry's father was called George and he was a farmer in 1861 having 34 acres of land, his wife (Henry's mother) was called Clara Pearce.
Also Henry was just a constable in 1881, did he leave the police force to join the coldstream  Guards and a Corporal at that, then back to the police force by 1891. Have just had a look at the 1871 census and cannot quite make out the occupation could be Farrier or Farmer but still living in Pilning.

Thanks for your help

Very likely, thank you Kay, but why do they have to change their names around to keep us on our toes!

Surrey, England, Church of England Marriages, 1754-1937

Image rechecked for marriage - could possibly say Farmer for occupation of Harry's father, but looks more like Farrier to me, and the name is definitely Henry.
