Title: Typing tuition in Sunderland about 1935-1940
Post by: Stalbridge on Monday 18 February 19 16:54 GMT (UK)
I am trying to piece together a sketchy outline for the life of my aunt following vague snippets from my mother's memory. My aunt (born 1920) attended St Anthony's Convent School in Sunderland and subsequently learned to type before employment at BHS. My mother seems to remember the name "Underwoods" in relation to Commercial training. Can anyone enlighten me further?

Possible - Underwood was the name of a typewriter -

Certainly a name I associated with my early secretarial days (not quite that long ago  :o )

Did she definitely train in Sunderland?

There was an Underwoods Secretarial College in Newcastle upon Tyne (one of many around the country)

I’ve done some searching in the Sunderland Echo but not found anything. There seems to have been a typing school after the war called Cardus in Stockton Road but that’s too late.

I did discover that Underwood was a brand of typewriters so maybe there is some confusion there? Or perhaps they ran schools?

Many schools/places of learning liked to advertise their worthiness by publishing their exam results in local newspapers.  Your problem might be solved in the local newspaper.

PS I learnt to type at night school on an Underwood typewriter.
