Title: John March & Jane Pott, Hawick
Post by: colincam on Monday 18 February 19 19:27 GMT (UK)
I have been struggling to find out what happened to John March and Jane Pott(s) who married on 20 Sep 1852 in Hawick. John was probably born c1833 in Edinburgh and Jane born c1831 in Hawick. As far as I have ascertained the couple had 2 children; John born c1854 and George born 19 Nov 1855, both in Hawick.  So John & Jane were still alive and living in Hawick when statutory registration was introduced. Where and when they died is a mystery. Can anyone help me?

Jane & son John are living with her mother in 1861.  All b Hawick

Jean Turnbull 50
Jean Potts 30 dtr millworker
John Marsh g/son 7
ED14 Pge 8 Line 6

You need to look at the original 1861 image on SP to determine if Jean was a widow and then look for a death for John between 1855 - 1861

Yes Wendy2305 that is their son John who dies in 1934
CaroleW, in the 1861 Census page you refer to, it states that Jean Potts is "married" but I haven't found her husband at this point.

Colincam, when son John married, what did he state about his parents?

What was father John's occupation from what you have?

With Carole's find for Jean and son John, this transcript shows her as still married in 1861 www.scottishindexes.com/61transcript.aspx?houseid=78914035

MonicaL. On John junior's marriage record in 1876 it states that his parents are both deceased and that his father was a Wool Framework Knitter presumably in the Hawick Woollen Mills.

SP has a death for Jane Potts in Hawick in 1861 but no age shown.  Nothing under March 1861-1876

I have just purchased the death record for Jane Potts d 1861 Hawick and to my surprise it is who we are looking for. I was absolutely positive I had checked that record at SP before.
The record indicates that she also married William Nelson (1860 Hawick)
So this all means that John March must have died between 1855 and 1860 and like you I have not found any death record for him even using Marsh as the spelling. The mystery continues.

On the death cert for son George in 1856 does it show father as deceased?  If it does it would narrow the search for John’s death

The 1860 marriage to Nelson shows her as Jane March

There is a death in Hawick in 1861 for a Jane Potts. No age recorded on the index (but will show on the original). I wonder if this could be John's mother Jane? Death not linked to surname Marsh.

This is him in 1871:

Jane Turnbull 59
John March 17 grandson wooldyer b Hawick

Address: 9 Senol Crescent, Hawick

Hi CaroleW
I have now purchased a death record for their son George and it reveals that his father was still alive at the time of his death in 1856. However more importantly the record states that his father was a Private in the 42nd Foot Regiment at the time. This would explain why we have not been able to find his father's death record between 1856 and 1860 in SP.
I will now have to search for records of the fallen with the 42nd Foot.
Thanks for your great assistance in this matter.

So he died sometime between George's death and shortly before Jane's remarriage to William Nelson.

I find it strange that her death reg shows her as Potts given the 2 marriages.  Who reported her death in 1861 as I can't find a William Nelson in Roxburgh in 1861 apart from one b 1808 who was married

On her death record Jane Potts is named as Jane Nelson and the informant is her husband William Nelson aged 23.
I have noticed in several instances in this search that in Census records the women are referred to by their maiden names even if they are married or have been married.
I now suspect George March sen might have been killed during the Crimean War or the Indian Rebellion. The 42nd Foot Regiment saw action in both these campaigns.

That was common practice, Colincam. In Scotland, women never lose their legal right to use their maiden name. This is why married women's maiden names features so strongly in Scottish records.

Hi All
I have a happy ending to my quest for information on the above couple.
I have discovered that John March was a Private with the 42nd Foot Regiment and that he was killed in Naini Tal, Bengal, India in 1858.

Can anyone locate a burial location for him?

Also thanks for all your help in this quest.
