Title: Jessie Stimpson - was she in a home from childhood onwards?
Post by: LDaw on Monday 25 February 19 13:02 GMT (UK)
Her birth was registered 1/4 ending June 1921.  I can't find any other record for her.

I'm told that one of the siblings was in a "Big Hospital" in Yorkshire and that her mother and eldest sister would go to visit.  I suspect it may have been her as I'm struggling to find info to the contrary.

My source thought it was a daughter that went into "care" but didn't know if it was because they were disabled or just unwanted.  Parents went on to have 7 more children (both girls and boys) so unwanted only seems likely if her mother had some sort of health crisis around that time.  (There were 4 siblings at the time of her birth; aged 2 to 7.)

If a disabled baby was born in Gainsborough, which institutions would likely to be used in the 1920s?

Wouldn't occupants of residential homes be listed on the 1939 Register?

Any thoughts welcomed.

Thanks

She could still be living and that is why you cannot find her in 1939

It's certainly possible that she never married and is very elderly.

There is a blocked record line on the family's 1939 Register entry but she is one of four siblings who could be hidden from view.  The potential siblings were 16, 18, 20 and 21 at the time.  (I can only confirm the deaths of 2 since then.)

It would be nice if she's alive and lucid.

The next eldest daughter died in 1999, I would have thought she is possibly still blacked out.

If it was a big hospital in Yorkshire, and Jessie had a mental health issue, it may have been Middlewood in Sheffield. There's info about its history on Wiki. It's gone by different names in its past and used to cover the West Riding. Lincolnshire also had its own asylum at Bracebridge Heath in Lincoln. Both are now housing developments.

Records for the former are with Sheffield City Archives, although I'm not sure what they'll divulge given it's still less than 100 years since Jessie's birth. Always worth the ask. At least you'll know if they have the records at all.

If she has passed away then maybe getting her exact date of birth would help locate her later in life.  Just a suggestion.

The mother originated from Lincoln so would have been aware of Bracebridge.  I think one of her sons later worked there too.  Sheffield sounds interesting.

The story is that they were in the Big Hospital as a child so it doesn’t suggest a mental health issue to me.  I imagined something she was born with or developed early.  (Could easily be wrong, trying to keep an open mind.

Good point about the exact date of birth.  I’ll check if she had a fuller name when I check out the date of birth

Do you know about the public family tree on Ancestry that has Jessie in it? There's a date, month and year of birth, and also a year of death.

I saw that but there was nothing to suggest a source so I wasn't very confident.  They had very little information in total which suggested very little research on her.

I have contacted the tree owner but she hasn't been active in the last few months so I'm not expecting a speedy reply.

Thanks

I wonder if the tree owner has used the death and DOB posted by keyboard86 above, not to say that it might not be the right Jessie. If she died in an institution, they may have assumed Jessie was short for Jessica and registered a death as such. Tameside still has some hospital records.

And there are lots of long-term care homes in the area although difficult to pin down which ones were there in 1998. Perhaps the borough council may have some info.

Another thought - could Jessie have been taken in and formerly adopted so her name changed? It should show this on a birth certificate. Handy if the tree owner has a copy of this.

Thanks for this.  I shan’t get chance to look into it for a couple of weeks but it looks like an interesting lead.

Hi the only problem with the Jessica Stimpson death in Thameside, is that their are other Stimpson deaths also there?

I suppose it's the coincidence of the DOB on the death entry being in Q2 1921 that makes it interesting. If you input 29 Apr 1921 to the 1939 Register, you don't get any returns for STIMPSON and only three for Jess* (females). Two have maiden names and married names (not STIMPSON); one has sole surname ARMSTRONG and no DOB on the transcription. As Rosie pointed out, Jessie could still be living and not in the 1939 Register but, if she's the lady who died in 1998, you'd think she'd be an open record by now. But I can't find a male STIMPSON marriage to a Jess* to account for her either, not that it means there isn't one, just not found one.

A bp record may give DOB to check against but can't find Gainsborough records for that time period on-line, and failing miserably with searching the Lincs to the Past website  ::)

There's a marriage for Bertram H HAYNES and Jessie STIMPSON in Q4 1843 in Abingdon with no obvious children for them. There's a Bertram H HAYNES in the 1939 Register in Birmingham born 1897, and looks to have died in Birmingham in Q4 1968 - but there's also two Bertram HAYNES (no middle initial) in 1939 as well - born 1891 and 1922.

LDaw is probably shaking their head and saying 'yes, been there...'

Doing a free search of 1939 surname Haynes (Stimpson) there is only one result a Jessie bn 1898.

So that rules her out as the Jessie born 1921.
