Title: St James Place, Whitehaven
Post by: buona on Wednesday 27 February 19 20:55 GMT (UK)
I have an ancestor on the 1911 census living at St James Place, Whitehaven.  I have an old map of Whitehaven but cannot find St James Place.  Can anyone help me locate it please?

It may not be correct but in 1911 there is a newspaper article that refers to St James' Hall, Market Place, Whitehaven.

Is your ancestor's occupation anything to do with musical halls?

Or -

Could it be James Place, Whitehaven with the number looking like St.?

What was his/her name so we can look at the census and see what it actually says.

Hi JJen and stanmapstone,
Thanks for your replies.  I’ve had another look at the 1911 census and the address is actually 7 James Place, not St. James Place – oops!  (Must have had St. James Church in mind!)  Sorry for the error and for troubling you.  Unfortunately, I still have no idea where James Place is so could you possibly help me out with this as well please?  Many thanks for your willingness to help

Maybe that is one of the roads that has been lost over the years.  There is a James Street Market Place.  Have you got a name we can look at and check on census  ???

St James Church is on High Street so doesn't seem to be in that area.

I notice on one of the other residents it says James Place West Strand - West Strand has changed loads over the years, its virtually on the harbour.

Here is an interesting thread with old photographs of Bardy Lane (reply 22) - West Strand - you may be interested in having a look through these.

Reply 1 mentions James Place - "  I imagine the houses lost under Quay St car park were not paticularly healthy places to live ... Bardy Lane, James Place etc"

This 1/500 Town plan gives a more detailed view of the area https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/297045/518087/13/100111
Change the zoom level as necessary.
