I am looking for information on John Johnston b Jan 1832 Aberdeenshire married Margaret Laing b 1841 Aberdeenshire. I believe their parents were Andrew & Betty Johnston and William & Elphet (?) Laing. My usual source, Scotlands People, since 'modernised' has not helped. I have emailed them with my concerns, awaiting a response. Anyway, any help as usual greatly appreciated, Thank You David

Have you found them on 1841, 1851 censuses etc?
What is your specific problem with scotlandspeople, please?
-
Tree on ancestry has birth for Margaret as 17/02/1848 Keith Banffshire Scotland - does this fit with censuses?

Like chempat I am wondering what the problem is with scotlandspeople. I use it regularly and never had a problem.
It is some years since they changed anything,
Curious,

There is a marriage for a John Johnston to Margaret Laing in Keith on 5/11/1870.
Have you looked at the marriage certificate on scotlandspeople - Ref 159/27.
That should confirm both sets of parents.

Thank you. I have just gone in to S.P and have access to this marriage record. In fact it is one I have 'paid' for previously. Printed it down. It seems that my problem, for what ever is getting census /birth records. I did get on 1st March 2019 a census record 1841 of Robert/Betty/John Johnston but no joy with others. Be interesting what comes back from Contact desk.
Cheers guys for your patience! David

I have had a response from the Contact Desk of Scotlands People with some useful information.
One of which is stated that individual records prior before 1855 may be missing as that the year that statutory registration came in to force. Prior there was a fee payable to the church clerks which people could not afford. Sometimes only the first born was recorded but not siblings. Additionally some parishes did not record information at various times. Also some times the registers were accidently destroyed before brought to Register House Edinburgh.
Hope this is helpful to other people on the Forum. Thank you all.david
