Can anyone help read the following lines..
Scars: on ? ? on forehead
Schools attended: does is it say ragged schools?
Offence: stealing a ? ? ? whip

Did wonder what that meant but according to google means charity schools.. obviously family didnt have much!

It reads as though he stole a pair (pr) of blinders and a whip, but I'm wondering if he actually made off with blinkers and a whip.
Not sure of the names of the persons he appeared before. One looks rather like Luccock to me, but initials not easy to decipher.

Looking at the 2nd page it says at the top 'see journal & punishment book' and idea if i could find that online?

Poor little chap was only 13! I do hope his life picked up after that. Do you know what happened to him? I don't know where you could find those records I'm afraid but I am sure someone will be looking at this thread who knows far more than I do, and who will be able to help.

Not a borstal - they weren't introduced until 1902. This 1865 record is from the Leeds Reformatory School.

That record of his punishments reminds me of my 1950s childhood. Whilst we weren't subjected to birching, we were certainly caned frequently, or slapped viciously with a ruler on the back of the legs, or had chalk and/or blackboard rubbers thrown at us. Reading the record you post, it looks appalling nowadays but not unusual well into the 20th century. Not that I'm condoning it, I always thought it barbaric.

Sadly i havent been able to find him after he was admitted.. there are a few records of Edward Johnson from Leeds but im looking to confirm its him

Although there is one Edward Johnson who deserted the army! :-\ not sure if its him or not as the record is on FOLD3 and i dont have a subscription for that :'(

Ragged Schools were, "intended to educate destitute children and save them from vagrancy and crime." They had been invented by John Pounds (1766-1839), a Portsmouth shoemaker, who, early in the 19th century, was moved with sympathy for these little outcasts and devoted himself to this good work. The ragged school movement found powerful support in active philanthropists when public attention was aroused to the prevalence of juvenile delinquency.
