I am searching for information about my father, Lawrence Robert Baker, also known as John Woods. Born 13th of July, 1928 and he had a brother by the name of Lindsay. I think he came from Victoria and lived around Ivanhoe NSW.
If anyone has any information, I'd be very grateful.

It is entirely possible that your person of interest is still alive. I see you have joined RootsChat today. It is likely that your topic heading and your request will be modified because the person you are identifying may well still be alive.
I can confirm that there was a chap who was aged 69 when he died in Western Australia in 1980 and he had the same names as your person of interest. His W.A. birth certificate is available from WA BDM as it shows his birth was registered in 1911, at Katanning, in W.A. So there may well be others with same or similar names, in any of the various states and territories across the entire continent.

So may I ask what information you are seeking about your Dad?
I assume you have copy of his death certificate, and it gives you information about his parents, his place of birth, where he was living at that time, his marriage/s, child/ren of the marriage/s, and his interment details.

JM, I assume we had received a death certificate when he died but I no longer have that. I searched in NSW BDM (he died in Broken Hill) and can't seem to find anything in either names, same for Victoria. I have no sure way of knowing if Lawrence Robert Baker was his real name, that information was given to us by our mother on his death so I'm not even sure what name was registered at his death.
I'm doing my family tree and wanted to know a little bit more about him, he never spoke of his family to us when he was alive so it's all a bit of a mystery really.

A death at Broken Hill should be registered NSW.

There is a registration on that online index for a John WOODS in 1984 and when you drill down on the option for date it does show it as 14 May 1984. The reference no. is 11723. An official transcription of that record will have all the same details as the real deal certificate, and the NSW BDM's website gives you details about those organisations too...

There's NOT two of them. There is just the ONE, but it is indexed TWICE. There is just the one reference number. If you have ordered it twice, make a phone call and cancel ONE of them. You will get all the info on ONE order....

It seems as though he was possibly illegitimate, using his mother's surname & possibly either his father or stepfather's surname hence the reason he didn't talk about his family?

I am wondering about the name in your Topic heading Lawrence Robert BAKER.
The death registrations etc are not showing Lawrence at all, I am curious as to whether it was really a name used by your man.
In Victoria, on the Electoral Rolls , there is a family who have the names you have mentioned above

When Winifred Caroline died, her father’s name is given as EDEY, not WOODS. ???

There was a marriage notice in 1923 which confirms the bride was the daughter of R EDEY of Berrimal.

What I have typed is from Ancestry's Death index.
Looking at the record on another source, it is recorded as BOOR.
This could be BOORT in central Victoria

wow, this is amazing, thank you for the effort you have put into finding this information for me! I am thinking this could very well be my fathers family. Re the name Lawrence, I can't be sure if that was his name or if it was John Robert; I am waiting to get the death certificate back to see if John Robert Baker fits the picture.

There was a family named WOODS living at St Arnaud. I think.... John and Susannah WOODS with an extended family.
There may be a connection there.

yes both my father and mother are buried at Ivanhoe and I visit there when I can but thanks for that. I knew my father as 'John Woods' when he was with my mother and until his death but it is anything before that time and under another name - either Lawrence Robert Baker (as I can recall my mother telling me) or Robert John Baker - from a death certificate which matches with the date he died and includes the name John Woods. I am still waiting on a copy of that death certificate, hopefully it had some more information on it that might give me some clues.
I still haven't had a chance to fully explore all the stuff you found for me yesterday - it certainly is interesting and still very much a mystery. Thanks again for all of your efforts!

I think your father may be my grandfather, Lawrence Robert Baker. Same birthday and birth place. My grandfather disappeared from somewhere near Nyah I think it was before my mother was born.
