Title: TURNBULL FAMILY / Gateshead, Durham (pre 1855) - help pls !
Post by: tarapre on Wednesday 06 March 19 12:09 GMT (UK)
Hi!

Looking for some assistance in tracing my family from Aus back to the UK and have gotten stuck!

So far I have -->

Frederick John TURNBULL (my great grandfather)

son of

Frederick Isaac TURNBULL b.1880 / Collingwood, Australia

son of

Robert Thomas TURNBULL b.1855 d.1919 / Gateshead, Durham, England
& Caroline Martha TUCKER b.1857 d.1898 / Prahan, Australia
(Married 1877 in Australia)

son of

??? Robert John TURNBULL ???

- Would love to confirm the parents of Robert Thomas TURNBULL. The Turnbull Clan Association lists his father as Robert John TURNBULL "b. say 1825" but there is no source for this info. The closest match I have found is a Robert John Turnbull b.1823 (March) in Lowick, Nothumberland to Peter TURNBULL and Ann GRAHAM or a John TURNBULL b.1823 (June) St Hildas, South Shields, Durham to also to a Peter and Ann Turnbull !

- Would also like to find out when Robert Thomas TURNBULL emmigrated. The closest match I have found for this is a Robt Thomas TURNBULL arriving in Melbourne from Liverpool in 1859. The Victorian Inward Passenger List 1839-1923 lists the following other TURNBULLs arriving that same year from Liverpool - Ann, Geo E, George, Jno, Margt, Robt, Robt Thos and Wm. I tried to find out more info about these names but struggled.

Any help on where / how I should go about looking to extend my search would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks :)

Welcome to rootschat

The only death I can see on freebmd that would match the 1919 one is this one but it has no middle name for Robert
Death Dec qtr 1919
TURNBULL    Robert    age 65
Houghton   reg district 10a   542

Does his marriage certificate give any information on his parents

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

There is a birth registration in Gateshead Registration District - June quarter 1855 - Robert Thomas Turnbull.  From GRO we have mother's maiden name of Oliver.  A copy of his birth certificate might be a good purchase - PDF version available from GRO.

Rosie, I looked and then re read and presumed that as this couple married in Australia then that is where they both died and assumed the ref to Gateshead related to the birth rather than the death.

Maybe I have misread.

It is not clear what the Gateshead refers to  :)  I thought he may have returned to Gateshead after his wife had died  :)

The marriage appears on the list of Victoria marriages - 1877 - plus the possibility of a second marriage, also Victoria - 1907 - Rachel Maria Henry.

The death entry in Melbourne, Victoria - 1919 - gives an age of 69, therefore birth around 1850.  Father stated to be Robert John Turnbull.

The marriage certificate should name both parents and give a place of birth and age.

1080 / 1877
TUCKER, Caroline Martha
TURNBULL, Robert Thomas

Would also like to find out when Robert Thomas TURNBULL emmigrated. The closest match I have found for this is a Robt Thomas TURNBULL arriving in Melbourne from Liverpool in 1859.

This Robert was aged 3 travelling on the Shalimar with his parents John, 24, a labourer, and Ann, 23.

Hi
Robert Thomas Turnbulls birth is registered in Gateshead  June 1855 mother' maiden name Oliver Vol 10A page 491
You could order the birth certificate which would give his parents but let's try without.
Other children Turnbull/oliver- Margaret Newcastle u Tyne June qtr 1852.

Baptism Robert Turnbull at Gateshead 6 Oct 1856 age 1 to John Turnbull and Isabella Ann

John Turnbull married an Isabella Ann Oliver at Newcastle Mar qtr 1855   vol 10B   98.
If you buy the marriage cert it would give you their fathers.
It was Newcastle St John the Baptist if someone can look locally

Isabella Oliver it seems appears on the 1851 census for Newcastle  New Road(altough her age is lower)
Isabella Oliver 42 butcher's widow born Kendal
Ann (Isabell Ann) 21 born Newcastle
Isaac 6

She was baptised Newcastle 23 Aug 1835 d of Thomas and Isabella Oliver.
Other children Mary Ann 19.11.1827,Thomas 20.6.1830,Thomas 15.8.1831 Isaac 14 Sep 1845,Jane 16 Aug 1846.

John,Isabella and their children don't seem to appear on the 1861 census so that arrival in Australia in 1859  seems right.
It gives father John 24 labourer and his wife Ann 23,Robt Thos 3
That would fit with what we have.
So John Turnbull would be born c 1835

I'd love to give the info for John but there are several choices.
One family tree has a baptism at Tynemouth 20 Sep 1835 to William and Isabella
The 1851 census has a Robert Turnbull  son of either William and Elizabeth living at Gateshead or John s of William and Margaret also at Gateshead a stone mason or John F Turnbull s of William and Ann at Newcastle a labourer.

If you can find his death in Australia hopefully it should give his parents
Alternatively you may have to buy that marriage in 1855 ,now c £7 for an electronic copy.
If i copied anyone's else's sorry but i was typing

Unfortunately only birth and death records are available under that system.  For marriages, you still have to order a paper copy (£11) and they're sent by snail mail (airmail if you're outside UK).

WOW !
Thank you so much for the FAST replies !

The "Gateshead, Durham" reference was listed as the birthplace of a Robert Thomas TURNBULL b.1855 (April May June). - A page on the Turnbull Clan site had b.1950 Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland so I wrote that down as a secondary possibility?

Re: Robert Thomas TURNBULL second marriage to Rachel Maria Henry in 1907. I also have that along with 4 children. (Robert Paul b.1902 d.1927, Dulcie Violet b.1907, Charles Percy John b.1911, William Harold 1914-1914).
He had 11 children from his first marriage to Caroline Tucker in 1877 (one of which was Frederick Isaac Turnbull).
The Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria list a Robt Thos TURNBULL d.1919 in Melbourne Australia. Parent 1 is UNKNOWN and Parent 2 is Robt Jno TURNBULL.

Victorian registry indexes are available online.  I strongly advise getting the 1877 marriage certificate.

Hello
I had a good look for Robert John Turnball and Isabella Ann Turnbull over in Victoria.
Sadly it looks like Isabella spent much of her life in Asylums for the mentally ill.
She entered Fairfield Asylum Melbourne 10.7.1869
Her husband John was in North Cote and she was a housewife aged 34
Suffering from mania
1871 transferred to Metropolitan Asylum
1893 -1910 boarded out with carpenter and then Mrs Murphy
1910 Sudbury HJ
She sadly died 9.7.1921 at Ballarat Asylum of heart and kidney disease.

Her husband may be the Robert Turnbull born 1835 died Ararat Victoria in 1900.

And while I'm here I'm going to take a guess at Robert John Turnbull and his parents
I think he is the John Turnbull baptised at Gateshead 12.10.1834 to William and Margaret Turnbull stone mason.
The couple married at Newcatle u Tyne 16.3.1834 .She was a Margaret Brown.
1851 census
William L Turnbull 41 stone mason Heworth
Margaret 41   Gateshead
John 16 apprentice wood tuner
Elizabeth 15 Heworth
Robert 14
William l 10 Gateshead
Charles 6 Gateshead

There that's my punt.

You are welcome tarapre! :)

Just to be clear though - there were definitely two Robert Turnbulls who signed - the signatures were very different.  Although, what relationship these two Roberts may have been to the groom remains a mystery as yet.  It is a shame witnesses weren't required to also write their relationship to the couple if there was one.
