Title: Wood Street Liverpool
Post by: paulsue38 on Friday 08 March 19 20:16 GMT (UK)
On a census document I have relatives in the 1871 census listed as living inn 5 Wood Street, Low Court House, W Derby.  Does anyone know what the Low Court House refers to and were was this located? Does it still exist?
Best wishes
Paul

Hi Paul,

Can you give the names of the relatives concerned or the census reference ? There were courts in Low Wood Street and I am wondering if it was one of those.

Many thanks for replying. The family is headed by Elizabeth Evans described as a Charwoman. The census reference is RG 10/3839. She is alone with the children because her husband Evan Daniel Evans has been transported to Western Australia for 10 years for Arson.
Best wishes
Paul

Very doubtful the place still exists. “Courts” were pretty grim housing in inner cities. A bit of information here:

There has been a lot of clearing of ‘undesirable’ housing over the hears, which I think still continues, sadly, in some cases.
I have to log off now but will return to search for the address later, if no-one beats me to it.

She's in 5 House, 5 Court, Low Wood Street. It will have been demolished long ago.

You can read about court housing here https://www.liverpoolpicturebook.com/2012/09/CourtHousing.html

Shaun will correct me if I am wrong, but I think you can see the coirts on the map he linked to. They will be the alleyways off Low Wood Street.

You can see the courts numbered on this Town Plan

Change the zoom level if necessary

Many thanks for the replies everyone. Elizabeth Evans was my 2nd Great Grandmother. Sounds like she would have experienced deplorable housing and absolute poverty, left with four young children and her husband transported for 10 years. She lived until her 80's a remarkable woman by the sound of it.
Best wishes
