Hello all, I have a date and location of death, hoping to use this as a start point but I have no idea how to begin; would some kind person point me in the right direction please?

How to do expect us to give you any advice without knowing a name, date or place to start? If you don't want to provide exact details them at least tell us when and where born and exactly what you are looking for help with.

If you gave a bit more information people may be able to help more.
Different countries have different records (and information from those records). The information also depends on the date.
But, (if the person died in England in the last 100 years or so), I would start by finding the death registration (try freeBMD.org.uk). This should give you an age which will give you a starting point to find a birth registration if the person was male. If female try looking for a maiden name on the birth registration of one of their children and then use the age to try to find the birth.
Hope that gives you a starting point.

So, according to the heading, this is your maternal grandmother we are talking about. You know, presumably (though we don't), her name, and where and when she died.
From her death cert, or from the entry in the gro indexes for her death, you will find her age at death if you don't already know it. That gives you an idea of when she was born.
From your mother's birth cert, you will find grandmothers maiden name. If you don't know your aunts and uncles names (if there were any children other than your mother) you can look for them.
You then know about when she was born, and what her name at that time was.
Hopefully you can find her marriage, now you know her maiden name, and the dates of when her children were born and what area.
Her marriage cert will then give you her fathers name.
When you get back to 1911and earlier, the censuses are there to help you see families together.
This is just basic Family History research. If you get stuck at any point, then people on here are happy to help you look, but will need to know names and dates that you have.
If your mother is still alive, then atart by asking her or seeing what documents she still holds.

Hello all, thank you for your replies. In the hours since I first posted I supplied the information I had in a 'chat'; several people helped me enormously, so I now have the information I needed.
As a total newbie, I didn't know my way around or how to proceed.
