I'm trying to find a death certificate in the GRO Index for this man, but without success.
Rifleman 4943 Charles Edward David Philpott, born in Dudley, resident 55 Freeman St, Coventry according to his surviving service papers. Died after discharge on 7.7.16 according to "Soldier's Effects".
He's not recorded by the CWGC, but I'm trying to find his death certificate to see if he should be so honoured. Can anyone find him on the GRO Index, because I can't...

There are lots of Phil*pot* births with mmn Turner in Dudley Reg Dis, so hard ot pinpoint which are likely to be his siblings.
However, this looks likely
- Alfred Frederick bn 1885
sadly he too perished in WW1 - he is on Find a grave dying 10 Oct 1918, son of Charles and Susannah of 7 Fisher Street Dudley
In 1891 here is that family, and I would say the Charles there is 'your' Edward Charles David, known by a middle name in the same way as Alfred Frederick is there as Frederick!

In 1911 Susannah and 11 yr old Ernest are with Alfred Frederick, now married, and his wife in Fisher Street again.
(Ernest and probably Samuel (who dies age0) are registered with no mmn - suggesting illegitimacy )

On his 1902 enlistment papers it gives next of kin as:
Father: Henry Philpotts, of 7 Court, Shavers End Dudley.
This has been crossed out and alongside it is written Brother Frederick elder.
Above is written: mother 8a, Earl Street, Kate's Hill.
Charles's trade is given as tailor: he had been employed for three years before enlistment by Ranger & Smith of High Street Dudley.

According to his entry in the "Soldier's effects" ledger, he died on 7th July 1916. His intended residence on discharge was stated as 55 Freeman St, Coventry.

On his 1902 enlistment papers it gives next of kin as:

This has been crossed out and alongside it is written Brother Frederick elder.

Charles's trade is given as tailor: he had been employed for three years before enlistment by Ranger & Smith of High Street Dudley.
Yet further on in the same record it gives his father as Charles and his mother as Susannah, which fits exactly with liz's findings.
In the 1901 Charles, son of Charles & Susannah is a Packer(iron) whereas, according to his enlistment papers he was a tailor :-\

It looks like that ledger ( "London, Gratuity of Soldiers Dying After Discharge") was written up much later (it's all in the same hand) so "1916 " could be an error by the clerk.

I'm wondering if there was a bit of a mix up over records, and some info for a Charles, a tailor, son of a Henry, and those of Edward Charles David known as Charles Edward David, son of Charles and Susanah, got confused, thus alterations made etc.

Another "mystery" is his address on discharge of 55 Freeman St, Coventry. That address also appears on the records of 2nd Lt John Wesley Edwards, MC - I wonder why?

55 Freeman Street was the Edwards family home ( various newspaper reports, May and June 1918 re presentation of the MC to the lieutenant's father).

Just received the Death Cert - it does not state that his illness was due to his military service, so he is correctly not recorded by the CWGC (although he is on our war memorial....).
A munitions worker, death was due to acute pneumonia; he died at 10 New King St, Dudley and his widow, Mrs E J Philpot, was in attendance.
