Hi
I hoping someone would be kind enough to look for a baptism of a William Mounsey son of William Mounsey who was born at Clifton, Westmorland between 1818 - 1822. I'm hoping it will name his mother.

Can I ask where this information has come from? No baptism that I can find nor can I find anyone with these details on census.

The 1851 census at a place called Cargo just nw of Carlisle. Aged 30 and born in Clifton Westm'd.
The 1861 census at place called High Pow, Upperby south of Carlisle. Aged 41 born in Clifton Cumb'd.
He was dead by 1871 and of course the 1841 doesn't help.
His marriage certificate states his father was William Mounsey (sailor) too.

Definitely not baptised in Clifton, Westmorland - indeed the only Mounseys/variants baptised there were in the late 19c.

That's so disappointing, thank you so much for looking. I've found nothing in the British Newspapers either. It seems a bit odd his father's occupation was sailor living near Penrith.

I like westlass thought about Gt Clifton as a possibility, only thing is the census says Clifton, Westmorland but these details can be very wrong.
Another thought - William may not have been born Mounsey, William Mounsey Snr may have been his step-father? As William is in the Cargo area on 1841 census maybe William snr is from Carlisle or the surrounding area and William jnr moved to the area with his mother. While being a sailor is not an occupation normally associated with Carlisle, it is not totally impossible. During the early 1800 ships did sail into Carlisle and also there was a working port at Port Carlisle (formally Fishers Cross) where ships regularly sailed with passengers travelling to Liverpool and onto America. http://www.ports.org.uk/port.asp?id=820
While Cargo isn't on the coast its not far as the crow flies from Port Carlisle and there was a river ferry crossing at Rockcliffe nr Cargo,

Anything is possible I suppose. I went through every William Mounsey in Cumberland/Westmorland but no one fitted the bill. He could of course have been deceased when his son married as they didn't always record that fact. I know there was a locally famous William Mounsey but he was a Royal Navy captain and just to refer to him as sailor doesn't seem right. Of course he could have been on board ship anywhere in the world. I also considered that even though I have a modern day hand written certificate from the registrar it could be misread as tailor (that's how desperate I am).
