Title: completed coroners inquests for middlesbrough
Post by: Coxon on Wednesday 13 March 19 20:03 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I have an old photograph entitled 'Jack Daykin' but I can't fit him onto my tree. The story in the family is Jack died in a car accident, so earlier this week I looked on a historic newspaper web-site and found that John Daykin, aged 23 (born 1902), died in a car accident on the 28th November 1925. It was reported in a lot of newspapers as the country was in the middle of Arctic type weather. All the reports say that the accident happened at Leven Bridge, near Yarm and the Yorkshire Post & Leeds Intelligencer said that an inquiry was to be held on the 30th November 1925.
The historic newpaper site had no local newspapers to Middlesbrough so I was unable to find an obituary for Jack/John.  I was wondering if here were any documents anywhere giving information on the coroners inquest and thereby giving me information on his family eg when he was born,  his parents, where he was born. The only Jack Daykin I could find in 1911 for  born 1902 is a patient at Middlesbrough Sanatorium. I don't think it is him as that Jack Daykin is in hospital with an Elsie  Daykin age 6 and they are both from Cargo Fleet and Elsie is not a family name.
I hope the above makes sense-.

I wouldn't rule out that Jack just because Elsie isn't a family name.

Parents on census seem to be Joseph Dixon Daykin and Elizabeth

Which leads to this marriage:
Oct/Nov/Dec 1901
Aysgarth
9d 1325

Joseph Dixon Daykin and Elizabeth Cockburn on same page

Does that help you fit him in?

Joseph Dixon Daykin can be seen on previous censuses with parents and siblings - parents Jonathan and Ann

Thank you for all that hard work. I inherited some of the family tree and I now see it has some errors. The biggest error was that Joseph Dixon Daykin married in 1907 and the first child was Phyllis, which you have now corrected. Thanks to you I now have a correct marriage in 1901 and three more children, one of which is John/Jack.
Thanks Louise

Looks like he was always a Jack - but the newspaper made the erroneous assumption he was actually a John!

I made the same mistake as John is a very common name in the family and although the photograph and story always called him Jack I thought it must be a nickname. Thanks once again. Louise

I visited Darlington Local Studies Library where local papers are on microfilm and found this for you:

From the Northern Echo Monday 30 Nov 1925

Fatal skid in turning corner at foot of steep hill

The most serious accident traceable to the weekend visitation of wintry weather is that which involved the death of a well-known Teessider Lieut-Col. G. O. Spence, D.S.O. and his chauffeur John Daykin on Leven Bank near Yarm on Saturday shortly after noon.  What happened is clear from the story of a police constable, P.C. Topham of Yarm, who was a witness of the accident. Col. Spence was driving and at the abrupt bend at the bottom of the hill just before reaching the Cross Keys Inn, Leven Bridge, he apparently applied his brakes to steady the car in negotiating the corner.  The tyres failed to grip the snow and frostbound road with the result the car swung round and then with the momentum overturned.  The constable rushed to the spot and found the Colonel and the chauffeur pinned underneath the car.  Assistance was secured from the inn and Col. Spence and Daykin extricated when they were both found to be dead.

There is a long article in the same edition describing Col. Spence’s life and achievements.  The chauffeur is mentioned as Jack Daykin in this article.  “Daykin who was 23 years of age and had been in the employ of Col. Spence for 3 years.  He was a single man and lodged at Church Row, Yarm.  He was the son of ex-Sergt. Daykin, formerly stationed at Yarm, who now resides at Askrigg.  The inquest will be held this morning.”

From the Northern Echo Tuesday 1 Dec 1925

Deaths: Daykin.  On Nov 28th accidentally killed on Leven Bank, Yarm, Jack beloved son of ex-Sergt. Daykin late of Yarm.  Interment at Askrigg on Wednesday December 2nd at 2 p.m.  Friends please accept this (the only) intimation.

Extract from Inquest Report:  Inquest held at the Cross Keys Inn, Leven Bridge.  The Police Constable said the Colonel was coming down very cautiously, his speed being only 5 mph, while to get a better grip of the snow-covered road he was keeping in close to the side.  At the side of the bank at intervals as supports are set in large boulders and these being covered by snow were not apparent.  The near front wheel struck one of these stones which had the effect of causing the car to swerve up the side and overturn.”  Deaths due to fracture of the skull.  “Accidental death” in each case.

Daykin was described as the son of ex-Sergt. Daykin of Fern Lea, Askrigg.

Best wishes
Tillypeg

Thanks for the street view, Stan.  I was up & down Leven Bank many many times in my youth - travelling from Stokesley to Yarm on the school bus to the Grammar School!  I can remember - not quite back to 1925 though ;) - the bus struggling in the winter.  The lovely white buildings have been rescued from dereliction in the last ten years or so.  The first house in the row on the right was empty for at least 45 years, to my knowledge.  The next was the pub, with the pale blue doors being the archway through to the small carpark.  It's amazing what the planners allow now, building houses so close to the River Leven.  The anglers who used to fish in the stretch of river behind this row do not have access now.

Thank you for going to the library for me-that is going above and beyond the call of duty!! It also clears up who was driving the car and what exactly happened. I will look at the street view link to get an idea of the area. After the crash, and for some unknown reason, the family were given a wardrobe from the colonel's estate, which we still call the colonel's wardrobe. We treasure the wardrobe and from the older generation knew a vague story about the crash and about the Colonel. Yet as the older generation died the story of Jack died with them. So thank you for all the information about him.

Glad I could help, Louise.  It wasn't out of my way, there is such a lot of genealogical information to be found in old newspapers.

Fancy being left a wardrobe!  How unusual......  I just wonder why the chauffeur wasn't in the driving seat, was it his day off?

Hi, Yes, a wardrobe is a strange thing to be left. We will never know why Jack wasn't driving-it does seem very strange. Thanks Louise

Hi Louise, I got your message thank you. Unfortunately looks like I'm unable to send messages.
I came across your post when searching online for information on my nephew Jack Daykin who tragically died last year (also aged 23!)
My Grandad (Robert Daykin) family were from Askrigg also, so I'm thinking the 2 Jack's might be related and would like to chat more.

Here is a link to an article in the Echo about my Jack xx

Hi, I'm sorry for the delay in replying. I don't communicate via e-mails, as I'm scared of viruses, but I'm happy to use the personal messages or the forum. All the information I have on Jack Daykin is provided on this thread, on this web-site, but I do have information on the Daykin (Askrigg) ancestry.  If you give me more details on George Daykin, e.g his birth date, whom he married, his parentage, etc, if you have it, I will see if it backs into my Daykin's.  I won't be able to answer this week as I'm decorating and all my family history files are on a pile, under dust sheets, somewhere, but I will get back to you as soon as I have finished.
Please accept my condolences for the death of your Jack. I read the link you sent, he sounded a lovely person.
I hope I can help you with your family history,
Louise
