Title: Francis Hurley Death 1865
Post by: Cas (stallc) on Thursday 14 March 19 16:17 GMT (UK)
All all,

Looking to go further back with my 3rd great grandparents.  On the marriage of his daughter Mary in 1873 when she married Thomas Bagot, (Williamstown area) he is a farmer and not down as deceased, but know this was not always listed.

On church Marriage record his wife is Mary Shiel.  The family were RC.

There is also a Griffiths Evaluation in 1856 Kilcroan, Galway area, listed as farmer with Patrick Sheil, not sure if him as all I have at the moment is his & wife's name.

I am wondering if any of these could possibly be his death?

FRANCIS HURLEY Date of Death 1865
District/Reg Area Glenamaddy
Deceased Age at Death 48
Year 1865, Quarter 4 ,Volume No 19, Page No 179

There is also this one

FRANCIS HURLEY Date of Death 1865
District/Reg Area Glenamaddy
Deceased Age at Death 48
Year 1865. Quarter 2, Volume No 9, Page No 191

Still find Irish Research confusing, have had great help from Rootschatters in the past. Be grateful for any help or imput.

Cas

Hi,

Would I have to buy the 2 death certs to find out if it his him?  If it is his death his children would have been born before 1864. His daughter Mary was born around 1851. Age 49 at death in 1900.

Sure this is him as Kilcooley is linked to Thomas & Mary Bagot children births.

1856- Griffith's Valuation Record.

Tenant Name HURLEY, FRANCIS - Landlord Name TIGHE, PATRICK. County GALWAY Barony BALLYMOE Union GLENNAMADDY Parish KILCROAN Townland KILCOOLEY.

Any idea of an area to search for a marriage or possible baptisms of the children of Francis Hurley & Mary Sheil?

Thank you for the link in previous post.

Rootsireland
The church record states 4 May 1873 at Ballintuber/Ballymoe, Co. Roscommon.

Thomas Bagot, address was Templetogher, Mary Hurley address Ballyglass. Includes both parent names.

Civil Record states Williamstown, his address Shanbally, hers Kilcooley, does not state all parent names, just fathers.

I only have these records on marriage, no cert, do not know marriage Church.

both ceremonies were carried out by Father Hugh Gately and he has noted on both marriages who's father was deceased so there is a great possibility that your Mary's father is not yet deceased by 1873

Thank you very much for the cert image.  :)

I had not see that before, just the records.  Cannot find any other Francis Hurley dying later than 1865, but looks like he could still be living in 1873 as you state.

Thanks once again both

Cas

I dont personally know any thing about land or lease transfers but maybe Hallmark could explain that to you as i believe from the 1901 census that your ancestor is living at the same address as Francis Hurley was in 1873.
on the 1901 census the property belongs to absentee landlord M? J Balfe
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000820064/

I wonder could this be Nicholas Joseph Balfe of Kingstown,Dublin

Hi, thank you for your reply.

The 1901 & 1911 census listed is my 2nd great grandfather Thomas Bagot. (it is the same address)I have all BMD info on him/wife & children. All his children were born Kilcooley. It was Mary Hurley address on marriage.

It looks like the address was previously in the hands of Francis, father of Mary, not on the 1901 at address so looks like he moved or died.  This info suggests that the 1856 Griffiths Evaluation is him, it is shared then with Patrick Sheil.  Sheil is the maiden name of Mary, wife of Francis on the Church marriage record of Thomas Bagot/Mary Hurley.

Looking to try go back or find out a little more about the Hurley family.  The link Hallmark posted for parish info is interesting.

Thanks once again both for your interest & imput

Ahh the landlord was Major Michael Joseph Balfe Connaught Rangers
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Castlereagh/Southpark_Demesne/763320/

he sold his lands to his tenants in 1906 which would explain your ancestor owning his house in 1911
see second last paragraph below
